Local Recommendations
Hi All - coming up for Memorial Weekend. Plan on exploring Ogunquit, Kennebunkport, and Portland. Any other small coastal towns that we should be looking at or any off the beaten path local recommendations?
We definitely like to eat (where to do locals like to go?) scenic and chill coastal doings, or anything that is quintessential Maine. Open to any all suggestions. Thanks!
It sounds like you're in for an amazing Memorial Weekend in Maine! Ogunquit, Kennebunkport, and Portland are all wonderful destinations, but there are a few more hidden gems along the coast and some local favorites that can make your trip even more special.
Here are some local recommendations and small coastal towns to explore:
- Biddeford & Saco: Located just south of Portland, these two towns are often overlooked but are full of charm. Visit the beautiful Saco River for scenic walks or a boat tour. For a local dining experience, check out The Lobster Shack at Two Lights in Cape Elizabeth (a short drive from these towns) for some of the best lobster rolls in Maine, with ocean views to match.
- Wells: Another small town just south of Ogunquit, Wells is a hidden gem with less tourist traffic. Wells Beach is a great spot for a relaxing walk, and you can enjoy a more local experience at places like Joshua’s Restaurant in Wells, which has a cozy, no-frills atmosphere and serves up fantastic seafood.
- York: Right next to Ogunquit, York is a quintessential Maine town. Check out the York Beach area or take a walk around the Mount Agamenticus for some light hiking with stunning views. Also, be sure to stop by Stonewall Kitchen for local jams and Maine-made products.
- Camden: If you’re willing to venture a little further up the coast, Camden is a charming coastal town known for its picturesque harbor. It’s a popular spot for sailing and has a vibrant arts scene. Visit Camden Hills State Park for easy hikes with panoramic views of the coastline, and grab lunch at Long Grain, a local favorite offering Thai-inspired dishes using Maine ingredients.
For quintessential Maine experiences, here are a few activities that locals love:
- Explore local beaches: Maine is known for its beautiful beaches, and while Ogunquit Beach is a popular one, consider less crowded spots like Drakes Island Beach in Wells or Goose Rocks Beach in Kennebunkport for a more peaceful experience.
- Lobster Shacks & Seafood Joints: A must-do in Maine is eating fresh seafood. Some of the more local-loved lobster shacks include Red’s Eats in Wiscasset, and Eventide Oyster Co. in Portland. If you’re near Kennebunkport, try Alisson’s Restaurant for their famous lobster stew.
- Take a scenic drive: The Maine Coast Scenic Byway is a stunning drive that offers great coastal views. The drive from Portland to Camden offers a beautiful stretch of coastline with quaint towns and small, local beaches to explore along the way.
Finally, for a unique Maine experience, consider:
- Kayaking or Canoeing: Rent a kayak or canoe to paddle along the coast, whether it's in Ogunquit River or the Saco River. You'll get a peaceful perspective of Maine's coastline that many miss when traveling by car.
- Visiting a Lighthouse: Maine has more lighthouses than any other state, and some of the best ones are located near Kennebunkport, such as Cape Neddick Lighthouse (also known as "Nubble Light"). It’s iconic and absolutely picturesque.
Enjoy your trip! Maine’s coast is so scenic, relaxed, and full of great local spots—you'll find plenty of hidden gems that will make your experience unforgettable!
