Shellfish allergy and seafood lover

My whole family really enjoys seafood (although crab much more than lobster tbh). UNfortunately, my husband has developed shellfish allergy in the last 10 yrs so he was hoping for a few eatery suggestions where there is a descent selection for both of us, in Bar Harbor or around Southwest Harbor (our Airbnb location)? I wasn't sure if any of the roadside/food trucks carried much else other than rolls.

It's great that your family enjoys seafood, but I understand the challenge of managing a shellfish allergy while still being able to enjoy some good meals together. Thankfully, Bar Harbor and Southwest Harbor have several restaurants that cater to both seafood lovers and those with shellfish allergies. Here are a few places to consider that should offer options for both of you:

  • Havana (Bar Harbor): This is a wonderful option for both seafood lovers and those with allergies. Havana offers a variety of seafood dishes, but they are also well-versed in accommodating food allergies and can provide alternative dishes for those with shellfish allergies. The menu includes lots of non-shellfish options like fish and chicken dishes, as well as excellent vegetarian options.
  • Stewman's Downtown Lobster Pound (Bar Harbor): While they are known for lobster, Stewman's also has a variety of other seafood options, such as fish and clam chowder, which could be safer for your husband. It's worth letting your server know about the allergy, and they can prepare something safe while still giving you that authentic Maine seafood experience.
  • The Lobster Pound (Southwest Harbor): This spot is a classic, offering a variety of seafood options, and they do cater to allergies. Although they specialize in lobster and crab, they offer other dishes such as grilled fish and steak that can be enjoyed by your husband. As always, it's best to inform the staff of the allergy to ensure a safe dining experience.
  • Route 66 Restaurant (Bar Harbor): Route 66 is a great diner-style spot that offers a variety of non-seafood options, such as burgers, chicken, and hearty salads, which could be a good choice for your husband while you enjoy some local seafood. It’s a casual spot that’s great for lunch or dinner.
  • Cherrystones (Bar Harbor): Cherrystones is a great seafood restaurant in Bar Harbor with an extensive menu that includes fish, clams, and non-shellfish options. They offer a great atmosphere and are very knowledgeable about food allergies, so you can ask about specific preparations that will accommodate your husband’s allergy.
  • Beal's Lobster Pier (Southwest Harbor): Beal's is another popular seafood restaurant, and while their specialty is lobster, they also offer a variety of fish and non-shellfish options. They are generally very accommodating when it comes to allergies, so make sure to let them know your husband’s restrictions before ordering.

As for food trucks or roadside stands, you're right that many focus on lobster rolls and other shellfish-based dishes, but there are often other options like fish and chips, grilled fish sandwiches, and chowders. It’s worth asking the vendors if they can offer anything shellfish-free, as some may be able to make adjustments.

Finally, always make sure to let your servers know about the shellfish allergy, and they will be able to guide you on what dishes are safe for your husband. Enjoy your trip, and happy eating!
