Best Souvenirs
My husband and I are gearing up for our first time to Maine. We're primarily focusing our trip to the Bar Habor/Acadia area. We'd like to bring back some souvenirs for our young adult children. What is something that is recommended or memorable to gift? Disclaimer: We're not into the generic and cheap touristy junk (t-shirts, magnets etc.), but looking something more specific to the region and culture. They are too young to appreciate home decor or anything like that at the current time.
One of my children LOVES blueberries so much, but I'm unsure how to cart anything fresh blueberry home to Kansas... Thoughts?
For a first-time trip to Bar Harbor and Acadia, there are plenty of unique, regionally inspired souvenirs that go beyond the usual t-shirts and magnets. Since your focus is on gifts for young adults, it’s best to think of items that are fun, edible, or showcase the local flavor and culture of Maine.
Here are some ideas to consider:
- Maine-made preserves and jams: Blueberry jam, wild blueberry syrup, or other locally produced fruit preserves are iconic to the region. These are shelf-stable, easy to transport, and are a perfect way to bring the taste of Maine back home.
- Maple products: Maine produces some wonderful maple syrup and maple candies. These are small, portable, and have a strong “Maine” identity without being touristy.
- Sea-inspired snacks: Dried seaweed snacks, lobster-shaped chocolates, or sea-salt caramels from local confectioners are fun and unique edible gifts.
- Local craft items: Consider small handcrafted items like locally made keychains, pins, or bracelets featuring lobsters, blueberries, or Acadia motifs. These are lightweight and easy to pack.
- Wild blueberry products: Since your child loves blueberries, look for dried wild blueberries, blueberry-infused honey, blueberry candy, or blueberry pancake mix. These are easy to transport and shelf-stable, unlike fresh berries which won’t travel well to Kansas.
- Local coffee or tea blends: Maine roasters often create blends inspired by the coast or local flavors; these are practical, fun, and represent the region.
Tips for gifting blueberries or berry products:
- Avoid fresh berries unless you’re driving; they won’t survive shipping or flying well.
- Opt for dried blueberries or preserves; they capture the flavor without spoilage issues.
- Check local farmers’ markets or specialty food shops in Bar Harbor — many offer beautifully packaged options suitable for gifts.
In short, think edible, portable, and regionally inspired. Focus on wild blueberry items, local preserves, maple treats, and small artisanal crafts. These gifts feel authentic, are easy to transport, and will give your children a taste of Maine without venturing into generic tourist items.
