Drive or walk

Hi, was wondering if we should drive to Zackary Park or walk. Our hotel is down by the southern most point. Also can go you go from Florida City stopping at some Islands along the way to Key West before dark the end of February. Note: first time coming here.

Visiting Key West for the first time is exciting, and how you choose to get around depends on your priorities—convenience, sightseeing, or exercise.

Walking from the Southernmost Point area to Zachary Taylor Park:

  • The walk is roughly 1.5–2 miles depending on your starting point. It can take 30–40 minutes each way.
  • This route allows you to enjoy the colorful streets, historic homes, and shops of Old Town Key West at a leisurely pace.
  • Keep in mind February weather is usually pleasant, but sunny days can be warm, so bring water and sunscreen.

Driving to Zachary Taylor Park:

  • Driving is quicker—about 5–10 minutes from the Southernmost Point area depending on traffic.
  • Parking is available at the park, but during peak season it can be limited.
  • This is more convenient if you’re carrying beach gear, planning a picnic, or want to maximize time for swimming and relaxing at the park.

Driving from Florida City to Key West with stops along the way:

  • The Overseas Highway (US 1) is scenic and allows for island stops at Key Largo, Islamorada, Marathon, and Big Pine Key.
  • Leaving in the morning gives you plenty of daylight to make a few stops and reach Key West before dark. Typical driving time without stops is around 3.5–4 hours.
  • Recommended stops for first-time visitors include:
    • John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park in Key Largo for snorkeling or glass-bottom boat tours.
    • Islamorada for a quick lunch or a visit to the Florida Keys History & Discovery Center.
    • Marathon to see the Turtle Hospital or relax at Sombrero Beach.
    • Big Pine Key to see the endangered Key deer at the National Key Deer Refuge.

Summary:

  • For exploring the southern Key West area at a relaxed pace, walking is enjoyable and allows you to see the Old Town streets and architecture.
  • If convenience, beach gear, or time efficiency is a priority, driving to Zachary Taylor Park is recommended.
  • Driving the full Florida City to Key West route with stops is very feasible in a day, but start early and plan your stops to avoid driving in the dark on the winding Overseas Highway.

Overall, a combination of driving for longer distances and walking locally in Key West gives the best balance of sightseeing, convenience, and enjoyment.
