Shuttle or Bus
Hello. Is there public transportation from the top of to bottom (and back) of Main Street in BH? As in a bus or shuttle service? I know the Island Explorer stops on the western side of the green, but I'm curious as to possible help to get back up the hill.
Bar Harbor is a charming town, and while it doesn't have an extensive public transportation system like larger cities, there are a few options that can help you get around, including up and down Main Street. While the Island Explorer bus system is the primary option for public transport in the area, it mainly serves the national park and the surrounding regions rather than providing direct shuttle service along Main Street itself.
However, there are still ways to get from the bottom of Main Street (near the waterfront) to the top (closer to the Acadia National Park entrance) without too much hassle:
- Island Explorer Bus:
- As you mentioned, the Island Explorer does stop near the western side of the green, but it primarily services the park and areas outside of downtown. It’s a great option for getting to the park or other locations, but it may not go directly up and down Main Street itself. If you plan on exploring the park or going to locations like Jordan Pond or Cadillac Mountain, the Island Explorer is a great option.
- Bar Harbor Shuttle:
- There is a local shuttle service run by the town of Bar Harbor, typically during the summer season. This shuttle can help you get around town, including up and down Main Street. While it’s not as frequent as the Island Explorer, it could be a good option for shorter trips within town. You can check for schedules and routes at the local visitor center or on the town's website.
- Walking or Taxi:
- If you're feeling up for it, Bar Harbor is a very walkable town, and depending on where you're staying, it may be a quick and easy walk up or down the hill. However, if you prefer a more relaxed way of getting around, you can always call a local taxi or use a ride-sharing service like Uber or Lyft, which are available in Bar Harbor, though they may be a bit limited in availability during peak tourist seasons.
- Bicycle Rentals or E-Bikes:
- Another option is to rent a bike or an electric bike. Many places in Bar Harbor offer bike rentals, which can be a fun and eco-friendly way to explore the town. If you want an easier ride up the hill, consider renting an e-bike, which can assist you with the incline without too much effort. It's a great way to see more of the area without the hassle of driving or waiting for a shuttle.
To sum up, while there isn't a dedicated shuttle service just for getting up and down Main Street, there are options like the Island Explorer, a town shuttle, taxis, or even biking. If you're only looking to get back up the hill from the waterfront, you may find it easiest to use the town shuttle or walk, depending on your location and energy level. You might also want to check with your accommodation to see if they offer any shuttle services or suggestions for getting around town.
Enjoy your visit to Bar Harbor! It's a beautiful place with lots to explore.
