First time - limited PCH question

I hope this question finds everyone well this summer and thanks in advance.

Taking our family of 4 (11 and 15 year olds) to CA for 8 days July 1-9.

We are doing multi day stops in both socal and norcal but we're hoping for help with a one full day itinerary from San Luis Obispo to Santa Cruz. We are hoping to stay along Route 1 and could use help with recommended stops that day, particularly related to interesting towns and scenic hikes along the way. We plan to get started early in morning and are okay with pulling into Santa Cruz late at night if necessary.

Our children have never been to CA and none of us have been on PCH.

Thanks!

Driving from San Luis Obispo to Santa Cruz along the Pacific Coast Highway (PCH, Highway 1) is one of the most scenic drives in California, and it’s a perfect way for your family to experience California’s coastline in a single day. Starting early is key, as this route has numerous picturesque stops and potential hikes along the way.

Here’s a suggested itinerary for your family:

  • Morning Start – San Luis Obispo: Begin your day early in San Luis Obispo. Grab a quick breakfast in town or pack something to eat on the way. Don’t miss the iconic Bubblegum Alley for a quirky photo stop if you like.
  • Morro Bay: Drive about 15–20 minutes from SLO to Morro Bay. Take in the view of Morro Rock, a massive volcanic plug. If time allows, a short walk along the waterfront or a brief beach stop can be refreshing for kids.
  • Cambria & Moonstone Beach: Continuing north, stop in Cambria for a quick stroll through this charming town. A short walk along Moonstone Beach Boardwalk is scenic and easy for kids, offering tide pools and beach views.
  • Hearst Castle (Optional): From Cambria, you can detour about 15 minutes inland to Hearst Castle. If your family is interested in history and architecture, a short tour is possible, but it will add an hour or two.
  • Big Sur – Scenic Drive & Stops: This is the highlight stretch. Drive through the iconic Big Sur coastline. Key stops:
    • Ragged Point: A viewpoint with dramatic cliffs and ocean vistas.
    • Pfeiffer Beach: Famous for purple sand and rock formations (parking can be limited, plan a short stop).
    • Bixby Creek Bridge: A classic photo stop; a pull-off offers excellent views.
    • McWay Falls at Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park: A short, easy hike to a stunning waterfall that drops into the ocean.
  • Carmel-by-the-Sea: Stop here for lunch or a snack. Explore the quaint streets and, if time permits, visit Carmel Beach.
  • Monterey: Drive through Monterey; if you wish, a quick stop at Cannery Row or the Old Fisherman’s Wharf can be fun. The children may enjoy seeing sea lions near the wharf.
  • Santa Cruz: Continue north on Highway 1 to reach Santa Cruz by evening. If arriving late, you can grab dinner along the way or in Santa Cruz itself. The Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk is a lively option if time and energy allow.

Additional tips for the day:

  • Start early, ideally around 7:00 AM, to maximize daylight and avoid crowds at popular Big Sur stops.
  • Pack snacks, water, and a light jacket—coastal weather can be cooler and windy.
  • Plan for flexibility; traffic, photo stops, and short walks will extend the day.
  • Charge cameras and phones; this route is highly photogenic!
  • Fuel up early; gas stations are sparse along Big Sur.

This itinerary allows you to experience the highlights of Highway 1 from San Luis Obispo to Santa Cruz in one day, combining scenic drives, easy hikes, charming towns, and memorable coastal viewpoints without making the day too rushed for kids.
