Maui late Sept/early Oct

Hello,

We’re looking at Maui or Kauai for my birthday (9/30-10/7). Family of three (16 yr old daughter). I know weather is unpredictable, but we’re looking for calm waters for swimming, snorkeling. Recommendations on beaches and areas to stay on Maui appreciated.

Aloha! Late September to early October can be a wonderful time to visit Maui. The weather is typically warm, and it’s just after the busy summer season, so beaches and resorts are less crowded. For calm waters suitable for swimming and snorkeling, your best bets are usually on the western and northwestern shores of the island.

Recommended areas to stay on Maui for a family with a teen:

  • Kaanapali / Lahaina: This area has a long stretch of sandy beach with calm waters for swimming. Snorkeling can be enjoyed near Black Rock, and there are plenty of restaurants, shops, and family-friendly activities. Many resorts offer pools and easy beach access.
  • Napili / Kapalua: Smaller, quieter beaches with calm waters perfect for snorkeling, especially for beginners. Napili Bay is particularly family-friendly and safe for swimming.
  • Wailea / Makena: South Maui has stunning beaches with gentle waves, ideal for swimming and snorkeling. Wailea Beach, Polo Beach, and Mokapu Beach are all excellent choices. The area also has luxury resorts, but smaller condos or vacation rentals can be found as well.

Top beaches for calm waters and snorkeling on Maui:

  • Molokini Crater: Accessible by boat tour from Maalaea Harbor or Kihei. Crystal clear waters and excellent snorkeling. Calm conditions are typical in early fall.
  • Honolua Bay: Great for snorkeling with a teen, but check conditions as it can get wavy in some weather.
  • Napili Bay: Calm, sheltered waters for swimming and beginner snorkeling.
  • Keawakapu Beach (Kihei): Long, sandy beach with gentle waves and good snorkeling near the southern end.

Additional tips:

  • Consider renting a car to explore multiple beaches and find the calmest spots each day depending on trade winds.
  • Arriving early in the morning can help you enjoy beaches before they get busy.
  • For snorkeling gear, many rental shops in Kihei, Lahaina, and Wailea offer high-quality equipment, including fins and masks.
  • Late September / early October is generally outside hurricane season, but always check the forecast before booking activities on the water.

Staying in either Napili/Kapalua or Wailea will give you easy access to calm beaches, family-friendly snorkeling, and convenient dining options. Kaanapali is a good balance of activity and calm waters. For a relaxing birthday trip, Wailea or Napili are especially recommended.
