Upgrading annual passes at universal
I have a 14 day universal plus 1 day epic universe ticket (UK ticket) for this year (August) and we are possibly looking at going to universal only next year (May)
My question is - is it possible to change my current ticket to an annual pass when we arrive? If so, any idea what the likely increase in price would be and the process for doing it?
Thank you
Good question. Short answer: maybe, but it’s complicated — especially because your ticket includes a day at Epic Universe, which recent guests say may prevent or limit the upgrade. Here’s a breakdown of what people have reported, the risks, and the steps you should take.
What People Have Experienced (Based on Guest Reports)
- Several guests on Reddit report that Universal is not consistently allowing upgrades from multi-day tickets that include an Epic Universe day.
- Specifically, one person with a “3-day park + 1-day Epic” ticket said a Cast Member told them they couldn’t convert to an annual pass because of the Epic day.
- Another said Universal told them it's “undecided” whether multi-day tickets with Epic can be upgraded to an AP.
- On older (non-Epic) multi-day tickets, many guests *have* upgraded successfully: Universal applies credit for the portion of the ticket value toward the pass, and you pay the difference.
- According to TripAdvisor, Universal “is always happy to let you upgrade … just pay the difference while the ticket is still active / in the park.”
- Reddit users also note that if your ticket has Epic included, some Guest Services reps will refuse the upgrade, citing that no current Annual Pass includes Epic.
How Much It Might Cost / What You’d Pay
- Universal’s policy for upgrading: you pay the full price difference between your ticket and the Annual Pass.
- You must pay in full at the time of upgrade — you cannot use Universal’s FlexPay (monthly plan) for the upgrade.
- As a rough estimate, the 2-park non-Florida Annual Pass options (2025 pricing) run between about $425 and $1,095, depending on tier.
- Based on what other guests have said: for example, someone upgraded from their UK 14-day + 1-day Epic ticket by getting the value of their UK ticket (~ £350) converted and paying the “rest” in USD.
- Important note: Universal does not necessarily provide a prorated or partial “refund” — they just apply the value of your existing ticket toward the pass.
Process to Upgrade (Based on Guest Reports)
- Go to a Guest Services window (ideally in the park) before your ticket expires or before you leave on your last day. Many guests say they did the upgrade on their last valid day.
- Bring your ticket (digital or physical) and a photo ID to verify who you are.
- If you're upgrading, you’ll pay the difference between what you paid and the cost of the Annual Pass in one lump sum.
- Note: because your ticket includes an Epic day, some Guest Services staff may refuse the upgrade, or only apply the value of the non-Epic portion. Several guests have reported this.
- If you decide to go ahead and cannot get it upgraded in-person, you might try contacting Universal’s Customer Service (or ticketing) before your trip to clarify. Some suggest doing this first so you know what to expect.
- Be aware: the start date of your Annual Pass will likely be based off the first day of your original ticket — so you might “lose” some value if you delay upgrading.
Risks & Things to Consider
- You might not be allowed to upgrade because of the Epic Universe day, based on recent guest reports and staff inconsistency.
- Even if allowed, the upgrade may be applied only to the non-Epic portion of your ticket, so the “credit” you get might be less than you hope.
- If you *can’t upgrade*, you could use your UK ticket for your August trip and then just buy an Annual Pass separately before your May trip — compare the cost to upgrading now.
- The policy may change: because Epic Universe is relatively new, Universal’s Guest Services and Ticketing reps may still be ironing out how upgrades work for tickets that include it. Several guests have reported conflicting guidance.
My Recommendation
Given your situation, I would do this:
- When you arrive for your August trip, stop by Guest Services *before your ticket expires* and ask specifically to upgrade. Bring all ticket documentation and ID.
- If you’re told “no” or they refuse due to the Epic Universe day, don’t assume it’s final — ask to speak to a supervisor, or consider contacting Universal Orlando’s customer care in advance of your trip for clarity.
- Compare the cost: see what it would cost to pay the difference now vs. just buying an Annual Pass later (before your May trip). Depending on pricing, that might be simpler.
Final Thoughts
It *can* be possible to upgrade, but because your ticket includes a day at Epic Universe, many people report that Universal is not consistently allowing that conversion. If you’re successful, the cost will be the difference between what you paid and the pass price — but there’s no guarantee you’ll get full value for the Epic portion. The safest bet is to try upgrading in person *during your August trip*, and have a backup plan (just buy a pass later) if you can’t.
