Best area for Soldier Field & 1st Visit
Hello, flying in end of August for concert at Soldier Field w daughter. Currently booked Embassy Suites Mag Mile but wondering if North Loop or an area closer to venue is better option for concert night or for exploring. Not much into shopping, more about parks, outdoors, sights, architecture, food & drinks. Sky bars, live music. And safety.
Assuming no way to get Uber after concert, so what are the safest options for traveling back to hotel? Thanks in advance.
Your current hotel (Embassy Suites Mag Mile) is in a good, safe, central area — but there are definitely neighborhoods that will suit your interests better, especially for easier travel to and from Soldier Field and for a “first-visit Chicago” experience that highlights parks, architecture, food, and nightlife rather than shopping.
Below is a breakdown of the best areas to stay, what they’re like, which might fit you best, and the safest/smartest ways to get back after a Soldier Field concert.
Best Neighborhoods for Your Trip Style
- South Loop (closest to Soldier Field) — If proximity to the venue is a top priority, the South Loop is the most convenient area. Hotels here are safe, near Grant Park, The Art Institute, Museum Campus, and have easy access to the lakefront. The vibe is quieter than River North but more convenient for walking to/from Soldier Field.
- North Loop / River North (great food, drinks, architecture) — Ideal for a first timer. Lots of restaurants, sky bars, riverwalk access, and nightlife. It’s lively but safe, with endless transportation options.
- West Loop / Fulton Market (excellent food, modern, trendy) — Chicago’s dining hotspot with upscale cocktail bars, live music, rooftop lounges, and walkable streets. Not as convenient for Soldier Field, but still doable via bus/Uber/taxi.
Which One Should You Choose?
- If you want maximum convenience for the concert → Stay in South Loop.
- If you want the best overall Chicago experience (food + architecture + nightlife) → Stay in River North / North Loop.
- If your daughter loves trendy food halls, bakeries, and chic lounges → Choose West Loop.
Hotels to Consider (Safe + Good Locations)
- South Loop: Hilton Chicago (classic, right on Michigan Ave), Hyatt Regency McCormick Place (closest to Soldier Field), The Blackstone (historic and elegant, across Grant Park).
- River North / North Loop: LondonHouse (sky bar + river views), Renaissance Chicago Downtown, Hyatt Centric Loop, Aloft Chicago Downtown.
li>West Loop: Hoxton, Nobu Hotel, Hyatt House West Loop.
Getting Back from Soldier Field After a Concert (Safest + Easiest Options)
It is absolutely possible to get an Uber/Lyft after a Soldier Field event — it’s just crowded and slow. Your experience depends on where you stand and how patient you are.
- Easiest and Safest Option: Walk to the Loop or South Loop — After a concert, thousands of people walk north from Soldier Field toward Michigan Ave/Grant Park. It is well-lit, police-staffed, and full of crowds. If you stay in the South Loop, you can walk directly to your hotel (20–30 minutes depending on where you stay).
- Second Best Option: Walk 10–15 minutes away before calling Uber — If you stay in the Loop, River North, or West Loop, walk away from the stadium perimeter to avoid the gridlock. Pick-up points like Michigan Ave, Balbo, or Wabash are much easier.
- CTA (Train) is Not the Best After Concerts — You could take the Green/Red Line from downtown after walking, but late-night crowds + post-concert rush make it slower. It’s safe but less comfortable.
- Taxi Stands — There are designated taxi zones north of the stadium that move quicker than rideshare.
Neighborhood Vibes Compared
- South Loop: Best for parks, lakefront walks, Grant Park, and convenience. Fewer rooftop bars but much quieter and safe.
- River North / North Loop: Best for nightlife, sky bars, live music venues, Riverwalk access, architecture cruises, restaurants of all styles. Safe and busy until late.
- West Loop: Foodie paradise — Girl & the Goat, Au Cheval, Time Out Market, rooftop lounges. Safe, trendy, less touristy.
Architecture, Parks, and Sky Bar Ideas For First-Timers
- Architecture River Cruise — Hands down the best introduction to Chicago.
- Millennium Park & Maggie Daley Park — Short walk from the Loop and South Loop.
- Lakefront Trail Walk or Bike — Gorgeous views and easy access from South Loop or River North.
- Sky Bars: LondonHouse, Cindy’s Rooftop (views of Millennium Park), LH Rooftop, and Offshore at Navy Pier (largest rooftop bar in the US).
- Live Music: House of Blues (River North), Buddy Guy’s Legends (South Loop), Green Mill (Uptown — famous jazz club).
My Recommendation for You
If you want:
- easy walk back from the concert + safety + parks → switch to a South Loop hotel.
- best overall first visit + nightlife/food/architecture → stick with River North or North Loop. Your Embassy Suites Mag Mile is fine, but a hotel on or near Michigan Ave south of the river puts you closer to Grant Park and the Riverwalk.
Bottom Line
You do NOT need to worry about being stranded after the concert. Uber and taxis are available — the key is to walk 10–15 minutes away from the stadium first. For your trip priorities (architecture, parks, sky bars, food), the North Loop / River North area is usually the best fit, unless you want the ultra-short commute to/from Soldier Field, in which case South Loop is ideal.
You’ll have a great first visit — Chicago is wonderful in late August and very walkable, especially along the lake and river. Enjoy the concert!
