Chicago train Ventra question

Hi

To get downtown from O’Hare do I need a Ventra card, or can I just tap with my credit or debit card like I do in London?

Thanks

To get from O'Hare to downtown Chicago using the CTA (Chicago Transit Authority) trains, you have a couple of options for payment, and you can indeed use your credit or debit card directly, much like you would in London.

Here are the payment options for your train ride:

  • Ventra Card: This is the standard fare card used for the CTA system. You can purchase a Ventra Card at O'Hare airport or any CTA station. The card can be loaded with money and used for multiple trips. You’ll tap the card at the entry and exit gates. Ventra cards can be purchased for as little as $5 (which includes $2 for the card and a $3 balance). They are widely available throughout the city and are a great option if you're planning to use public transit multiple times.
  • Contactless Credit or Debit Card: You can also use your contactless credit or debit card (such as Visa, MasterCard, or American Express) directly at the turnstiles, similar to how you would use it in London. Simply tap your card on the reader at the start of your trip at O'Hare and again at the exit station downtown. This method works just like a Ventra Card but doesn't require you to purchase one. Just make sure your card has a tap-to-pay feature.
  • Ventra App: Another option is the Ventra app, which lets you load a virtual card onto your phone and tap it at the turnstiles. This can be a convenient option if you prefer using your phone over a physical card. The app is available for both iPhone and Android devices.

In summary, you don’t need to buy a Ventra Card if you have a contactless credit or debit card. You can simply tap your credit or debit card directly at the station. However, if you plan on using public transportation multiple times during your trip, a Ventra Card or the Ventra app might be more convenient for you.
