Breakfast on clockwise route out of Honolulu

So, every time I visit, I hire a care for the day and do the lap drive and I always go anti clockwise. Just for a change, this time I am going to go clockwise, so basically turn left out of my hotel, the Ilikai, drive towards the airport and head that way (I know I can't actually turn left out of the Ilikai, I need to go around the block but you get what I mean!

So I figured a care might give me a chance to have breakfast somewhere I might not normally get to -any suggestions in say the first 45 minute along this route? I plan to leave around 7am. Happy to get off the highway as long as I am heading in basically the same direction. I have had breakfast at Arvo before which is on Coral Street so not that far away but easier to get to with a car and easy to park at but just a bit tucked away and its nice. Open to suggestion

Driving clockwise from the Ilikai, you’ll head toward the airport and the windward side of Oahu. Within the first 45 minutes, there are several great breakfast options that are convenient for a car and offer easy parking. Since you’re open to leaving the highway slightly, you can access some local favorites and hidden gems that aren’t as crowded as the typical Waikiki spots.

  • Koko Head Cafe (Kaimuki area): A popular brunch spot, about 20-25 minutes from Waikiki. They have creative breakfast dishes with generous portions, and you can usually find street parking nearby. Open from 7am, so perfect for your timing.
  • Over Easy (Hawaii Kai): Slightly further out, around 30-35 minutes drive. They offer classic breakfast and brunch items with a local twist. Parking is available in a small lot and on the street.
  • Hula Grill Waikiki: About 5 minutes from your hotel if you decide to start just a touch later or want to stay near the beach. They have ocean views and a solid breakfast menu, and valet parking is available.
  • Liliha Bakery (Kapahulu): Roughly 15-20 minutes from Waikiki. Famous for their cinnamon rolls and traditional breakfast plates. Street parking is available, and it opens early enough for a 7am start.

Tips for your clockwise drive breakfast:

  • Leaving around 7am helps avoid peak traffic near the airport and gives you plenty of time to enjoy a leisurely breakfast.
  • If you prefer minimal detour from the highway, Liliha Bakery or Hula Grill are easiest, while Koko Head Cafe requires a short drive inland.
  • Consider calling ahead if you want a table at Koko Head Cafe, as it gets busy quickly despite opening early.

These options give you a mix of local favorites, easy parking, and the chance to experience something different from the usual anti-clockwise route spots. You’ll have a satisfying breakfast before continuing your clockwise island adventure.
