boogie boarding beaches?
We've had three days of misses with boogie boarding so far. Polo, Maluaka and Wailea Beach (today). No boogie board waves. Any tips? Should we head to Kaanapali or DT Fleming since south shore isn't looking great?
Thanks.
Aloha! Boogie boarding in Maui can be tricky because conditions vary a lot depending on the wind, tide, and swell direction. South Shore beaches like Polo, Maluaka, and Wailea are often very calm, especially in summer and early fall, which is great for swimming but not ideal for boogie boarding.
If you’re looking for waves suitable for boogie boarding, you might want to head to the west or north shores, where the swells tend to be more consistent and fun for bodyboarding. Here are some tips and beach options:
- Kaanapali Beach: This beach can have fun boogie-boarding waves, especially near Black Rock. Early morning often has cleaner waves before the wind picks up.
- DT Fleming Beach: Known for bigger waves than south shore beaches. Great for bodyboarding when the swell is up, but watch for stronger currents.
- Launiupoko Beach Park: Offers smaller waves closer to shore, good for beginners or lighter swell days.
- Honolua Bay (northwest shore): Better for experienced riders when the waves are bigger; conditions can vary, so check daily surf reports.
Additional tips:
- Check local surf reports or apps to see current swell and wind conditions.
- Early morning tends to offer the cleanest waves before trade winds pick up in the late morning/afternoon.
- Bring fins for extra speed and control on bigger waves.
- Always observe the beach first — waves can look gentle from shore but may have strong currents or shore breaks.
- Ask local lifeguards or surf shops about current boogie-boarding-friendly spots that day.
In short, yes — Kaanapali and DT Fleming are often better bets than south shore beaches for boogie boarding, especially if you’re chasing actual waves instead of calm water. Keep an eye on swell direction and tides, and you’re likely to find some fun rides.
