Breweries - tell me more please!
Last we were on Kauai, we only knew about the Kauai Island Brewery, which we did visit. Now I see that it looks like a few more have been added and they all seem to rate well. Would love your comments on beer and food! Mahalo! :)
Kauai’s craft beer scene has grown nicely over the past several years, so it’s no longer just Kauai Island Brewery in Līhuʻe. For visitors interested in sampling local brews while enjoying some casual food, there are now several noteworthy spots around the island.
Popular breweries to check out:
- Kauai Island Brewery (Līhuʻe) – The original brewery, known for approachable, easy-drinking beers. Favorites often include their Blonde Ale, IPA, and seasonal selections. They have a small menu of pub-style food, including pizzas, sliders, and snacks, so you can pair your beer with a bite.
- Hanalei Brewing Company (Hanalei) – Located on the north shore, they offer a relaxed tasting room and are known for tropical-influenced beers like the Hanalei Island IPA and Coconut Porter. Food is limited, but some events feature food trucks or light bites.
- Halelea Brewing (Kapaʻa) – A newer entry, they focus on small-batch craft beers, often with experimental flavors. The space is casual and family-friendly; check their social media for pop-up food options or scheduled food trucks.
- Wailua Brewery & Tasting Room (Wailua) – Offers a mix of classic beer styles and tropical twists. Their tasting room occasionally serves light snacks, but it’s more about enjoying the beer and atmosphere.
Tips for visiting Kauai breweries:
- Many breweries have rotating taps, so it’s a good idea to ask what’s on special or seasonal.
- Food options vary; some breweries rely on food trucks or bring-your-own snacks. Plan accordingly if you want a meal with your beer.
- The north shore breweries (like Hanalei Brewing) are beautiful to visit for scenery, but driving times can be longer from Poipu or Līhuʻe, so plan a brewery day trip if you want to hit multiple locations.
- Some breweries offer flights or tasting paddles, which is a great way to try multiple beers without committing to full pours.
Overall, Kauai’s breweries provide a casual and friendly way to sample local craft beers, enjoy unique flavors, and sometimes pair with small bites. For visitors, a brewery day can be combined with exploring nearby beaches or scenic spots to get a full island experience.
