Boat tours with snorkeling
Looking for recommendations for the end of May. Want a tour that is a bit smaller in size. Potentially. Want to see parts of the island you can't see except for by boat with great snorkeling. Not sure if raft tours at that time of year would mean rough seas. Hoping to find one that's no more than 6 hours. Given the length of time, would love recommendations and thoughts on whether a larger boat is needed because of rough seas and need of bathroom. Not opposed to a private charter but feel that will be cost prohibitive as it's just two people. Thanks in advance
Aloha! Snorkeling and boat tours along Kauai’s Na Pali Coast are spectacular, and planning for the end of May is generally good weather-wise. The coastline is dramatic and only accessible by boat, kayak, or helicopter, so a boat tour is the best way to see sea caves, cliffs, and pristine beaches while also snorkeling.
Considerations for boat type and tour length:
- Raft / Zodiac-style tours: Smaller vessels can get closer to sea caves and waterfalls. However, they can be rougher in choppy seas, and May can still have moderate surf. They usually accommodate fewer people (often under 25), which gives a more intimate experience.
- Larger catamarans or boats: Offer more stability, bathrooms, shade, and sometimes more amenities. They are more comfortable for people sensitive to motion but may not get as close to cliffs and caves.
- Tour duration: Most Na Pali tours are 4–6 hours. A half-day tour is possible, but it may limit snorkeling opportunities. Full-day tours often include multiple snorkeling stops, lunch, and more scenic exploration.
Recommended types of tours:
- Na Pali Raft Tours: Small rafts or zodiacs, often with groups under 25. Great for adventure and getting close to cliffs and sea caves. Can be rougher, but exhilarating if you’re comfortable with waves. Typically 4–5 hours.
- Catamaran Tours: Medium-sized catamarans (20–50 people). More stability and facilities like bathrooms. Some allow snorkeling stops with gear provided. Tours usually 4–6 hours and include lunch and drinks.
- Private Charters: If cost is not prohibitive, private charters provide flexibility for snorkeling spots, timing, and pace. Many are fully crewed with bathrooms on board. You can choose a 4–6 hour trip tailored to your preferences.
Tips:
- Check the weather and surf forecast before booking; small raft-style boats may cancel in rough conditions.
- Bring motion sickness remedies if you are prone to seasickness; small rafts are bumpier than catamarans.
- Snorkeling gear is usually provided, but you can bring your own if preferred.
- Morning departures generally have calmer seas and better visibility for snorkeling.
- End of May is typically good for smaller boat tours — seas are not as rough as winter months, but it’s still important to confirm daily conditions.
In summary, if you prefer adventure and intimacy and are comfortable with some motion, a small raft or zodiac is ideal. If you prefer more stability and comfort with bathrooms and shade, a medium-sized catamaran is the better choice. Private charters are flexible but cost more, so for two people, a small public tour might balance adventure and affordability. Whichever you choose, you’ll have an unforgettable view of Kauai’s Na Pali Coast and excellent snorkeling opportunities.
