how is the departure situation this summer at OGG ?
Hi, I had read on the forum last spring that there were long lines waiting to go thru check points due to staff shortages. We will be coming for a week in late August and leaving on a Tuesday domestic flight at 9:30 PM. Just trying to plan on when to return the car rental , etc. Mahalo!!
Departing from Kahului Airport (OGG) in Maui during the summer months can sometimes involve longer wait times, particularly during peak travel periods, due to staffing shortages and higher passenger volumes. Late August is still considered summer travel season, so it’s wise to plan ahead.
Here’s what to keep in mind for your departure:
- Arrival at the Airport: For a domestic flight, airlines generally recommend arriving at least 2 hours before departure. Given the potential for longer lines at security, adding an extra 30–45 minutes is prudent, especially in the evening when multiple flights can overlap.
- Car Rental Return: Most rental car companies advise returning your vehicle at least 1.5 to 2 hours before your flight to account for the shuttle ride to the terminal, check-in, and security lines. Late evening flights can sometimes be less crowded at the counter, but shuttles may run less frequently.
- Security Wait Times: Summer evenings can see moderate lines at TSA, though they usually aren’t as long as morning peaks. Still, expect at least 20–40 minutes, and more if several flights are scheduled to depart around the same time.
Tips for a smoother departure experience:
- Check your airline’s mobile app for real-time security wait updates.
- Have your boarding passes and ID ready to speed through checkpoints.
- Consider using TSA PreCheck if eligible, which can significantly reduce wait times.
- Plan to drop off your rental car at least 2–2.5 hours before your flight to avoid stress.
In summary, for a 9:30 PM domestic flight in late August, returning your rental car around 7:00–7:30 PM and arriving at OGG by 7:30–8:00 PM should give you plenty of time, even with the occasional delays.
