Our cruise ship ports in Bar Harbor, we have basically 5-6 hrs and there are no excursions offered by the cruise. What is the best way to see the area including the park?
It sounds like you’ll have a limited amount of time in Acadia National Park, but don’t worry — you can still experience some of the park’s best highlights in 5-6 hours! Here’s a suggested itinerary for making the most of your time on Mount Desert Island:
1. Start in Bar Harbor Bar Harbor is a charming coastal town and the gateway to Acadia. It’s only a short distance from the park, and you can begin your visit by exploring the waterfront. Stroll through the town for a quick look at the shops, galleries, and restaurants. If you’re in the mood for a snack, head to Café du Monde for a traditional Maine treat of popovers or grab a lobster roll at one of the local seafood joints.
2. Drive the Park Loop Road The best way to see the park quickly is by driving the Park Loop Road, a 27-mile scenic route that takes you through the park’s most iconic spots. You can drive it at a leisurely pace, making stops at several key viewpoints. Here are the must-see stops along the way:
3. Explore Bar Harbor (Optional) If you have time left after your drive through the park, consider stopping back in Bar Harbor to explore more. You could visit the Bar Harbor Shore Path for a scenic stroll along the coastline, or visit Agamont Park for more views of the harbor and nearby islands. If you’re into shopping, the town has plenty of charming shops and local markets.
4. Additional Option: Acadia’s Visitor Center If you prefer a more structured experience, you can start your visit at the Acadia Visitor Center in Hulls Cove (just outside Bar Harbor). The staff can provide maps and additional information on trails and scenic spots. The Visitor Center is a good place to get oriented quickly and plan your stops inside the park.
5. Plan Your Time Efficiently Given your limited time, I suggest focusing on the top highlights like Cadillac Mountain, Thunder Hole, and Sand Beach. You can do a quick drive of the Park Loop Road (about 1.5-2 hours, depending on how long you stop at each location) and still have time for a quick visit to Bar Harbor. Make sure to keep an eye on the clock so you can return to your cruise on time.
With this itinerary, you’ll be able to see some of Acadia’s most famous sights, enjoy the natural beauty of the park, and still have time to explore Bar Harbor. Have a fantastic day exploring Acadia!
