Only 1 day
Family is doing a fall foliage tour of Maine and we are based in Bangor. Hubby and I want to go to Acadia, but will only have 1 day. We are seniors, don't hike, but get where we need to. Would it be best to take the bus from Bangor, or drive ourselves, park and take the IE around? We hope to get to Jordan Pond, Thunderhole, Bubble Rock and the Park Loop Rd. Is this even doable and are there any suggestions for us? Thank you very much
Visiting Acadia National Park in a single day from Bangor is definitely doable, especially if you focus on the scenic drives and easy-to-access viewpoints rather than long hikes. Since you are seniors and prefer minimal walking, planning carefully will make the day more enjoyable.
Driving vs. taking a bus:
- Driving yourselves gives you the flexibility to set your own schedule, stop at viewpoints along the Park Loop Road, and visit Jordan Pond, Thunder Hole, and Bubble Rock at your own pace. From Bangor, the drive to Bar Harbor is about 1.5 hours, so it’s manageable for a day trip.
- Taking a bus or guided tour from Bangor is an option if you prefer not to drive. However, tours can be tight on time, and you may not get as much flexibility at each stop. Some buses only provide a brief stop at major points and may not allow for leisurely enjoyment.
Suggested itinerary for the day:
- Leave Bangor early in the morning to maximize daylight in the park.
- Start with the Park Loop Road, which is a scenic drive with many pull-offs. Stops like Sand Beach, Thunder Hole, and Otter Cliff are easily accessible and require minimal walking.
- Head to Jordan Pond House for lunch or a quick tea and popovers break. The area is flat and easy to navigate.
- Visit Bubble Rock along the carriage roads; a short, gentle walk leads to this iconic glacial boulder.
- Take in any remaining scenic viewpoints along the Park Loop before heading back to Bangor.
Tips to make the day smoother:
- Arrive early at popular spots to avoid crowds, especially in peak fall foliage season.
- Bring water, snacks, and a camera to enjoy the views without feeling rushed.
- If parking is a concern, consider using smaller pull-offs along the Park Loop, as main lots can fill quickly.
- Wear comfortable walking shoes and layers; fall weather can be cool and breezy, especially near the water.
Overall, driving yourselves provides the most flexibility and allows you to fully enjoy the park at your own pace. With careful planning, you can comfortably see Jordan Pond, Thunder Hole, Bubble Rock, and the highlights of the Park Loop Road in a single day.
