Dinner in Evanston
Looking for a restaurant recommendation in Evanston in early August (so likely still summer hours if that matters).
We are family of four with two teenagers, one vegetarian. Price doesn’t matter, though we will be in our travel clothes, so not looking for anything super fancy. Just want to get a feel for the town!
Walkable from campus and/or near a train line back to Chicago River North would be a bonus.
Also thinking we will try to stop in to Bennisons Bakery before they close that day, so somewhere near there could work well too.
Appreciate any suggestions!
Evanston is a charming, walkable town with a mix of casual and eclectic dining options, perfect for a family looking to enjoy summer in early August. Since you’ll be near Northwestern University and Bennisons Bakery, there are several options within easy walking distance or a short ride from the Metra or CTA lines.
Here are some restaurant suggestions suitable for families, including vegetarian options and casual attire:
- Hearth Restaurant – A contemporary American spot with a focus on fresh, seasonal ingredients. Offers vegetarian-friendly options and a relaxed but polished atmosphere.
- Found Kitchen and Social House – Trendy spot with small plates, pizzas, and pastas. Vegetarian options are available, and the casual, open atmosphere is great for families.
- Osteria Via Stato – Italian cuisine with pizzas, pastas, and some vegetarian selections. Not overly formal and within walking distance from the central Evanston area.
- Tapas Valencia – For a fun family-friendly option with shareable plates. Plenty of vegetarian tapas and a lively atmosphere.
- Big Bowl – Casual Asian-inspired dishes, including noodles, rice bowls, and vegetarian-friendly choices. Good for a relaxed meal with teens.
Other considerations:
- All of these restaurants are within a reasonable walking distance from Bennisons Bakery, so you can easily combine a sweet stop with dinner.
- Most spots are casual enough for travel clothes but still offer a local, “Evanston vibe” experience.
- If taking transit back to Chicago, you can catch the CTA Purple Line from downtown Evanston or Metra from the Main Street or Davis Street stations, which are both near the restaurants mentioned.
Plan ahead if you’re visiting during dinner hours in early August, as some places may still have summer crowds, but walk-ins are usually possible. Enjoy exploring Evanston and its vibrant food scene!
