First Time Visit To Oahu - Hotel Question
Hello:
My wife and I are considering a trip to Oahu in October. We are planning to stay on Waikiki beach. We are both "beach people" and will probably spend at least 2 days just relaxing on the beach. From my research it seems that the beach quality can vary depending on where you are staying. It is also important that we find a hotel that offers umbrellas on the beach or at least the ability to rent them. Which hotels are considered to have the best beach where we can also rent umbrellas? Also a pool isn't a high priority. Appreciate any info you can provide. Thank You
Waikiki Beach is divided into different sections, and the quality of sand, wave conditions, and available amenities can vary depending on exactly where you stay. Since your focus is on beach relaxation and access to umbrellas, choosing a hotel with direct beach access and easy umbrella rentals is key. Most major beachfront hotels offer umbrellas, either included with your stay or available for daily rental.
Best areas and hotels for beach quality and umbrella access in Waikiki:
- Waikiki Beach fronting the Royal Hawaiian and Moana Surfrider: This central section of Waikiki has soft sand, calm swimming areas, and hotels that offer umbrella and chair rentals right on the beach. The Royal Hawaiian provides an iconic experience with easy beach access, and the Moana Surfrider also offers beach service for umbrellas and lounge chairs.
- Hilton Hawaiian Village area (West Waikiki / Ala Moana end): Known for a wider beach with plenty of sand and generally fewer crowds than central Waikiki. Umbrella rentals are available through the hotel or beachfront vendors. The gentle slope into the water is ideal for lounging and swimming.
- Outrigger Waikiki Beach Resort and nearby properties: Offers direct beach access and onsite rentals of umbrellas and chairs. This area is popular for calm water swimming and beach lounging, right in the heart of Waikiki.
Additional tips:
- Arrive early if you want to secure prime beach spots, especially on weekends or during busy travel periods.
- Most hotels will have umbrella rentals available for a daily fee, but some premium rooms or packages include beach service as part of the stay — it’s worth asking when booking.
- If avoiding crowds is important, consider the eastern end of Waikiki (near Kaimana Beach) which tends to be quieter while still offering umbrella rentals from nearby hotels.
- Even if you are not concerned about a pool, many beachfront hotels maintain direct access to soft sand and calm water areas suitable for swimming and sunbathing.
In summary, for your first visit to Waikiki with a focus on beach time and umbrella availability, hotels like the Royal Hawaiian, Moana Surfrider, Outrigger Waikiki Beach Resort, and properties near Hilton Hawaiian Village will provide excellent access, reliable rentals, and comfortable beach conditions for lounging and swimming.
