HertzPlate Pass

Have booked car hire with Hertz via Virgin. I want to use the Visitor Toll Pass. Does anyone know how to opt out of the Plate Pass that is fitted to Hertz vehicles i can only find info for opting in.

When you rent a vehicle from Hertz, they typically offer the option to use their Plate Pass service, which allows you to automatically pay for tolls without stopping. If you want to use the Visitor Toll Pass instead and wish to opt out of the Plate Pass, you can do so, but it’s not always immediately clear from the Hertz website.

Here’s what you can do to opt out of the Plate Pass:

  • Contact Hertz Directly: The easiest way to opt out of the Plate Pass is to contact Hertz customer service directly. You can call their toll-free number or visit the rental location when you pick up your car and request that the Plate Pass be disabled for your rental. If you do this at the counter when picking up your vehicle, make sure the representative confirms that the Plate Pass has been removed.
  • During the Booking Process: If you're booking the car rental in advance through Virgin or another site, look for the option to opt out of the Plate Pass during the checkout process. If it’s not explicitly mentioned, you may need to call Hertz ahead of time to confirm this choice.
  • Alternative Tolls: If you opt out of the Plate Pass, you will need to pay tolls manually using cash or a traditional toll booth. You can also use the Visitor Toll Pass as you mentioned, which allows you to use toll roads without the Plate Pass, but it’s important to clarify with Hertz beforehand so that you aren’t charged for using their Plate Pass service.

If you're not able to opt out online or during the booking process, make sure to address it when picking up your car so you won’t be automatically enrolled in the Plate Pass. Hertz will still offer you the option to purchase it for convenience, but it’s up to you whether you choose to decline.

Remember that the Plate Pass is an optional service, and opting out will save you the daily fees associated with it. Make sure to keep all toll receipts or records in case there are any issues later with charges.
