Aloha! The Kona side of the Big Island has several beaches that are ideal for beginner boogie boarders. Since your kids are 10 and 14 and just starting out, you’ll want beaches with gentle, rolling waves, sandy bottoms, and minimal rocks or coral.

Here are some great options for boogie boarding in August on the Kona side:

  • Kahaluu Beach Park – This is one of the most popular spots for beginner surfers and boogie boarders. The waves are usually small and gentle, and the sandy entry makes it safe for kids. There’s also a reef further out, so the waves break early, giving a nice gentle ride.
  • Magic Sands Beach (La‘aloa Beach Park) – Known for its soft sand and friendly waves in the summer months. It’s perfect for beginners, but check the sand conditions because sometimes the beach narrows after high surf or winter months.
  • Honl’s Beach – Near Kailua-Kona, this beach has calm waters and gentle waves in August, making it beginner-friendly for boogie boarding. Less crowded than Kahaluu, so your kids will have more space to practice.

Tips for a safe and fun boogie boarding experience:

  • Always have kids wear a rash guard or wetsuit to protect from sunburn and minor scrapes.
  • Use fins if possible — they help with paddling and catching waves.
  • Check the local surf conditions before heading out — Kona is generally calmer in summer, but waves can still change quickly.
  • Supervise closely, especially if kids are still learning to handle waves or currents.

In summary, Kahaluu Beach Park is the top recommendation for beginner boogie boarders, with Magic Sands and Honl’s Beach as good alternatives. These beaches provide sandy, relatively calm conditions, making them perfect for learning without the hazards of rocks or strong currents.
