first time visitors - hotel recommendation request
Looking forward to our first time visit in April. We are looking for a nice hotel preferably on the beach and not an all inclusive. If we could walk out and snorkel that would be perfect. We will be taking a trip out to the reef also, as well as a fishing charter, but if we could snorkel a bit at the hotel during other times that would be a plus. Thanks.
For first-time visitors to Key West in April who want a nice hotel on the beach, with easy access to snorkeling and without an all-inclusive setup, there are several excellent options. Staying on the water with beach access is ideal for spontaneous snorkeling, and proximity to local attractions makes planning reef trips and fishing charters convenient.
Hotel Recommendations:
- The Reach Key West, Curio Collection by Hilton – A beachfront property with direct access to a small sandy beach ideal for snorkeling. Offers a relaxed, upscale atmosphere, pool, and easy access to Duval Street for restaurants and shopping.
- Southernmost Beach Resort – Located on a larger stretch of beach, with water sports rentals and opportunities for snorkeling right off the beach. The property is modern, has multiple pools, and is within walking distance to local bars and eateries.
- Ocean Key Resort & Spa – While not a private snorkel beach, it is right on the water at the end of Duval Street, offering stunning views and easy access to charter boats for reef trips or fishing. They provide concierge services to help book snorkeling excursions.
- Casa Marina Key West, A Waldorf Astoria Resort – Offers a more classic, upscale resort feel with two pools, direct beach access, and calm waters suitable for beginner snorkeling. The location is a short drive or bike ride from the center of Key West.
Additional Tips for Snorkeling and Activities:
- Even if your hotel allows snorkeling from the beach, the coral reefs a bit offshore are often richer; booking a half-day reef snorkeling tour is highly recommended.
- Fishing charters can be booked near the hotels, particularly at Key West Bight or the marinas close to Duval Street.
- April is peak season, so early booking is advised for both hotels and tours to secure preferred times and accommodations.
- Consider renting snorkeling gear from a local shop to explore near your hotel in addition to organized tours.
In summary, for a first-time Key West visit, beachfront hotels like The Reach, Southernmost Beach Resort, Casa Marina, or Ocean Key Resort provide a mix of direct water access, upscale amenities, and convenient proximity to reef tours and fishing charters, allowing you to enjoy both relaxation and adventure without an all-inclusive commitment.
