Mosquito Spray
Any recommendations for mosquito or no-see-ums? Arriving next week so checking if there's any decent sprays or roll ons I can bring or buy when there. Thanks
Key West and the Florida Keys in general are known for having mosquitoes and no-see-ums, especially in the warmer months. Protection is definitely recommended, particularly in the early morning and evening or near mangroves and water.
Here are some effective options for mosquito and no-see-um protection:
- DEET-based sprays: Products containing 20-30% DEET are highly effective and widely available. Examples include OFF! Deep Woods and Repel 100.
- Picaridin-based sprays: Picaridin (around 20%) is a good alternative to DEET, effective against mosquitoes and no-see-ums, and tends to be less oily and less irritating to skin.
- Natural/essential oil options: Citronella, lemon eucalyptus, or oil of lemon eucalyptus sprays can provide moderate protection but are generally less effective than DEET or Picaridin, especially for no-see-ums.
- Roll-ons and lotions: Repel makes DEET roll-ons which can be convenient for applying to smaller areas like the face and hands. These are great if you prefer not to spray.
Additional tips:
- Apply repellent every few hours as recommended, especially if swimming or sweating.
- Wear lightweight long sleeves and pants during dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active.
- Consider treating clothing with permethrin if you plan on being outdoors a lot.
- Many local stores in Key West, including CVS, Walgreens, and convenience stores, carry these products if you prefer to purchase upon arrival.
Overall, a DEET or Picaridin spray for exposed skin combined with light, long-sleeved clothing is the most reliable way to avoid bites from mosquitoes and no-see-ums in Key West.
