Shopping for sweatshirt
Any recommended places or areas to shop for a nice woman's or unisex crewneck sweatshirt with "MAINE" on the front?
By saying "nice" I mean not touristy-cheap but also not luxury expensive at the same time. I have a car so, I don't necessarily have to stick to Downtown or Old Port.
Thanks in advance for the help!
Portland, Maine, has several great options for finding a high-quality “MAINE” sweatshirt that is stylish, comfortable, and not overly touristy. Since you have a car, you can explore a mix of Downtown, Old Port, and nearby shopping areas to find something that fits your style and budget.
Local Boutiques and Apparel Shops:
- Portland Trading Co. – Known for classic Maine-themed apparel with quality fabrics. They carry crewnecks, hoodies, and casual wear that are stylish but not over-branded tourist items.
- Ship to Shore – Offers locally-inspired clothing and accessories, including unisex and women’s sweatshirts with subtle Maine designs.
- Merrell or L.L. Bean Outlet (Freeport, 20–25 min drive) – While slightly outside Portland, Freeport is home to quality outdoor apparel retailers. L.L. Bean has premium crewnecks and pullovers with Maine-themed designs that are durable and classic.
Downtown & Old Port Shopping Areas:
- Explore Exchange Street and Middle Street for local boutiques carrying Maine apparel, often with modern designs suitable for adults looking for a nicer, casual sweatshirt.
- Check out The Holy Donut Shop area and nearby small shops – sometimes hidden gems with high-quality locally printed apparel.
- Local Gift Shops with Curated Items – Some downtown shops focus on quality over kitsch, selling Maine-themed apparel that is wearable year-round.
Tips:
- Look for 100% cotton or cotton-blend crewnecks for comfort and longevity.
- Ask the staff if they have locally-produced or limited-run sweatshirts for a more unique piece.
- If time permits, take a short drive to Freeport for L.L. Bean’s flagship store – they have classic designs, good quality, and unisex sizing options.
Overall, combining a walk through Old Port boutiques with a short drive to Freeport will give you the best chance of finding a nice Maine sweatshirt that feels authentic, stylish, and well-made without being overpriced or overly touristy.
