Brightline train Orlando to Fort Lauderdale

Brightline train Orlando to Fort Lauderdale

Has anyone from UK used this train? I'm trying to book (from England) two tickets from Orlando to Fort Lauderdale return for November and finding the booking process very confusing. Do we also have to pay for baggage - will both have just one cabin sized case with us. Any info re booking procedure would be very useful. Thanks.

Brightline is a relatively new intercity rail service connecting Orlando, Fort Lauderdale, West Palm Beach, and Miami. Many international travelers, including from the UK, have used it, but the booking process can feel confusing at first because it differs from standard European train systems.

Here’s a detailed overview of the booking procedure and baggage policy:

  • Booking Online: You can book tickets directly on the Brightline website. International credit cards are generally accepted. You select your departure and arrival stations (Orlando to Fort Lauderdale), date, and the number of passengers. Prices may fluctuate depending on demand and how far ahead you book.
  • Ticket Types: Brightline offers Standard and Select service. Standard is comfortable with reserved seating, while Select provides extra perks like larger seats, lounge access at stations, and complimentary snacks/drinks.
  • Baggage: You do not have to pay for small personal bags or cabin-sized luggage. Each passenger may bring one large carry-on and one personal item (backpack, purse, laptop bag). Oversized items may be subject to additional charges or require special handling, but a standard cabin-sized case is included free.
  • Mobile Tickets: Tickets can be displayed on your smartphone, so printing is not necessary. You check in at the station using the app or QR code.
  • Station Access: Orlando’s Brightline station is adjacent to the airport (MCO area), so it’s convenient if you’re arriving by flight. Fort Lauderdale station is downtown, with easy access to rideshares, taxis, and public transport.

Tips for UK travelers:

  • Book as early as possible to lock in lower fares; Brightline prices tend to fluctuate as the travel date approaches.
  • If using a UK credit card, make sure your bank allows international online purchases; some banks may block unfamiliar merchant codes.
  • Arrive at the station at least 20–30 minutes before departure, especially if it’s your first time using Brightline. Staff are helpful and can guide you to your seat.
  • Keep baggage simple—Brightline is very accommodating for carry-on luggage, so a single cabin-sized case each is perfectly fine.

Overall, Brightline is straightforward once you understand the website navigation and ticket options. The journey between Orlando and Fort Lauderdale is about 3–3.5 hours, smooth and comfortable, making it a convenient alternative to flying or driving along I-95.
