Waikola? Dec 2025
I have a work trip to Hilo in December. I went to Hilo last year at this same organization. This year my husband is planning on coming with me.
We would fly in on Sunday, Dec 7. I did Volcanoes National Park last year, but we would probably visit again on Mon, Dec 8, and maybe one other site around Hilo. I have to work Tues-Thur (Dec 9-11). My husband will putter around the hotel and the town while I'm at work. We might venture out to see some sights after I'm off work, but I do generally have some work I have to do at night, so it wouldn't be too much.
My real question is, is it worth staying a few extra nights (at our expense) in the Waikola area? I have quite a bit of Hilton and Hyatt points so that would be my first choice of resorts. My thought was that we could drive up to Waikola after I get done with work on Thursday and stay until Sunday or Monday.
We have been to Maui and Oahu before so take that into account.
Thoughts? Is there anything worth leaving the resort for on the north side of the island? Of course, a tropical resort in December is a treat in itself.
Thanks in advance!
Your trip to Hilo sounds like a great opportunity for both work and some exploration! It's great that you're considering adding extra time in the Waikoloa area, which is known for its luxurious resorts and beautiful beaches. Here are a few considerations for your trip:
Staying in Waikoloa after work:
- Waikoloa is known for its stunning beachfront resorts, and with your Hilton and Hyatt points, it sounds like a great opportunity to unwind at a high-end property after your work commitments in Hilo. Waikoloa offers a more relaxing, resort-style environment, so you can enjoy some well-deserved downtime while your husband enjoys the beaches or leisure activities.
- The drive from Hilo to Waikoloa takes about 1.5 to 2 hours, and you’ll be passing through some lovely scenery, including the stunning Waipi'o Valley (if you take the scenic route). This could be a pleasant way to transition from work to vacation mode.
- If you're looking for a more relaxed atmosphere after your work week, staying in Waikoloa might be the ideal option, as it will allow both of you to recharge while enjoying the island’s natural beauty. The resorts in Waikoloa are upscale, and you'll have access to beautiful beaches, spa treatments, and plenty of dining options.
What’s to see and do around Waikoloa:
- While Waikoloa is known for its resorts, the area is also great for exploring beautiful beaches. A-Bay (Anaehoomalu Bay) is a great spot for swimming, snorkeling, or just relaxing on the beach. It’s within walking distance from many of the resorts.
- Pu'ukohola Heiau National Historic Site: If you’re interested in history, this site is a great place to learn about Hawaiian culture and the history of King Kamehameha’s rise to power. It’s located in Kawaihae, which is about a 20-minute drive from Waikoloa.
- Hapuna Beach State Park: This is one of the most famous beaches on the Big Island, just north of Waikoloa. It’s great for swimming, picnicking, and has some of the clearest waters on the island. If you want a more secluded beach experience, head to Mauna Kea Beach, which is often less crowded.
- Waikoloa Beach Resort Area: You can spend time exploring the shops, restaurants, and even the petroglyphs at the resort area. It’s a peaceful place to walk around and enjoy some downtime.
Considerations for extending your stay:
- December in Waikoloa is typically warm and sunny, making it a great place to relax, especially if you're looking for a tropical escape after working in Hilo.
- However, since you’ve already been to Maui and Oahu, you may have experienced some of the island's signature experiences. Waikoloa is somewhat quieter compared to the more bustling areas on the west coast like Kona. But it can be an ideal place to slow down and enjoy the natural beauty without the crowds.
- If you're considering venturing out, you might want to explore the Kohala Coast or drive up to Mauna Kea for stargazing or even visit the Mauna Kea Visitor Center if you're interested in astronomical observations.
Conclusion:
Given your schedule, staying in Waikoloa after your work in Hilo seems like a wonderful idea. The resorts in the area provide a great opportunity to unwind, and with your Hilton and Hyatt points, you’ll get excellent value for your stay. While there’s not a huge amount of sightseeing on the north side of the island compared to other regions, the stunning beaches and luxury resorts should provide the relaxation and natural beauty you're seeking. If you're in the mood for adventure, you can also explore a few historical and cultural sites nearby. All in all, it could be a great way to extend your time on the Big Island.
