Uber/Lyft From and to Phoenix Airport
Hi, everyone.
Husband and I will be at a convention in Tucson next week, but are considering flying round trip to Phoenix (from LAX).
My husband needs assurance that we will have a ride from Phoenix to Tucson, using Uber or Lyft. I would like to wait until arrival to book the ride. On the way back, we would book in advance. I prefer Lyft because my understanding is that Uber drivers don't know the destination until they pick up the passengers and we don't want to be left stranded.
Also, I don't know where to find information on curbside service. At LAX, arriving passengers who take Uber/Lyft/taxi are taken by shuttle to a pick-up spot that is away from the airport. I would appreciate any information that you may provide.
Thank you very much for your help.
Using Uber or Lyft from Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport (PHX) to Tucson is feasible, but there are a few considerations to ensure a smooth trip. The distance is roughly 115–120 miles, so fares are higher than typical city rides and the drive takes about 1 hour 50 minutes to 2 hours, depending on traffic.
On-demand rides vs. pre-booking:
- Both Uber and Lyft allow you to request a ride on arrival, but for a long trip like PHX to Tucson, drivers may decline if they feel it’s too far or out of their preferred area.
- Pre-booking a ride using Lyft’s “Scheduled Rides” or Uber’s equivalent can give more assurance. Scheduling in advance allows you to secure a driver willing to make the longer trip and provides a confirmed pickup time.
- It’s common for travelers on long intercity trips to pre-arrange rides rather than rely solely on curbside availability.
Regarding your concern about drivers not knowing the destination:
- With both Lyft and Uber, the destination is shared with the driver once the ride is accepted. Lyft is generally considered more transparent about long-distance trips, but you can confirm with the driver before starting.
- For peace of mind, you might contact local Phoenix-based ride services or consider private shuttle companies for a guaranteed intercity transfer.
Curbside pickup at Phoenix Sky Harbor:
- Rideshare pickup is not immediately at the terminal. Passengers are directed to designated rideshare areas at each terminal:
- Terminal 3: Ground Level, Door 2 for pickup
- Terminal 4: Ground Level, Door 6 for pickup
- Signage in the airport and on the Uber/Lyft app will guide you to the correct pickup location. There is no need for a shuttle; the pickup spots are just a short walk from baggage claim.
- Drop-off and pick-up locations are separate. When returning to the airport, the app will guide you to the correct terminal for your departure.
Summary recommendations:
- If you want reassurance for the PHX to Tucson ride, consider scheduling the Lyft in advance rather than waiting until arrival.
- Check the estimated fare in the app so you are aware of the cost and can confirm with the driver if necessary.
- For the return trip, booking in advance is ideal, especially if you want a guaranteed ride at a specific time.
Following these steps will ensure you have a smooth intercity rideshare experience from Phoenix to Tucson and back without surprises.
