Breakfast
Can someone please recommend a breakfast place walking distance to the modern Honolulu ?
Great question — there are a number of really good breakfast spots within walking distance of The Modern Honolulu (which is located on Kalākaua Avenue, near the Ala Wai Canal). Here are some of my top picks, plus a few notes about each.
- Island Vintage Coffee — Located in the Royal Hawaiian Center, this is a convenient and relaxing café for coffee, açai bowls, Hawaiian breakfast plates, and lighter fare.
- Monkeypod Kitchen Waikiki — This is one of the few Monkeypod locations to serve breakfast. The menu is creative and locally inspired (think Mai Tai flapjacks, chilaquiles, etc.).
- Heavenly Island Lifestyle — A health-focused café offering organic and locally sourced ingredients, with great eggs Benedict, bowls, and other wellness-driven breakfast items.
- Aloha Kitchen — Cozy and charming, this café is known for its soufflé pancakes, classic breakfast plates, and local touches.
- Hideout Waikiki — A bit more tucked away, but still walkable. The menu includes omelettes, loco moco, pancakes, and more.
- Barefoot Beach Café — Right on Queen’s Surf Beach, offering a laid-back, beachy breakfast experience.
- Sweet E’s Café — A whimsical, friendly spot serving innovative breakfast fare like guava-cream cheese French toast and kalua pig benedict.
Tips for breakfast near The Modern Honolulu:
- Go early — many of these places (especially Monkeypod, Aloha Kitchen, and Heavenly) get busy in the morning.
- If you want to grab-and-go, Island Vintage Coffee is ideal.
- For a more leisurely sit-down breakfast, Hideout Waikiki or Aloha Kitchen are great choices.
- If you’re up for a very casual beachfront breakfast with views, Barefoot Beach Café is a lovely spot, especially if you want to eat and then stroll along the beach.
