Overnight stay cruise ship

We will have an overnight stay in maui. We don't like organized tours as we like the flexibility of spending as much time as we wish wherever we go.

How much would it cost to hire a driver? We have done it other places, but I'm guessing maui is quite expensive.

This is a general question... we don't know yet what we want to do. Maybe drive around the countryside a bit.

Any other options?

Hiring a private driver on Maui can be an excellent way to explore the island at your own pace, especially if you dislike organized tours and want flexibility. Rates vary depending on the company, vehicle type, and duration, but for a general idea:

  • Half-day (4 hours) private driver: typically $250–$350
  • Full-day (8–10 hours) private driver: typically $450–$600
  • Luxury vehicles or vans for larger groups may cost more, sometimes $700+ per day

Drivers can create customized itineraries for you, including stops at beaches, scenic lookouts, small towns, or the countryside. Some may also provide insider tips for hidden spots, hikes, and local eateries.

Other options for exploring Maui independently include:

  • Rental car: Renting a car is common and gives you complete freedom to set your schedule. Prices can range from $50–$100 per day depending on the vehicle and season. Consider a GPS or offline map for easier navigation.
  • Guided self-drive tours: Some companies offer maps and recommendations without a driver, giving flexibility but providing guidance to must-see spots.
  • Bike or scooter rentals: For short distances or exploring towns and beach areas, this can be fun, though limited for longer trips.
  • Combination approach: Hire a driver for a half-day to see remote areas or get local insight, then use a rental car for your own sightseeing.

Since you mentioned possibly exploring the countryside, a private driver can be ideal for stops in Upcountry Maui, the slopes of Haleakalā, and scenic routes such as the Piilani Highway to Hana, allowing you to enjoy the sights without rushing. Booking in advance is recommended, especially for cruise ship stopovers, to ensure availability.
