Dog On Demand, Maui Humane Society

We just got back from Maui and I wanted to recommend Dog On Demand, a wonderful volunteer activity with the Maui Humane Society which allows both visitors and residents to take a dog for an afternoon outing. This was definitely a highlight of our trip! All dogs are up for adoption and appreciate being walked, played with and petted for a few hours. The dog we were assigned was Felix, a very spirited but affectionate mixed breed whom we took to Big Beach where he played in the water then to the Shops of Wailea where he chilled out with water and dog treats. We were also hoping that people would see him and be interested in adopting him but that didn't happen. Felix's profile is on the Humane Society website along with other dogs and other animals who need homes. They will transport pets to the Mainland too. Anyway I just wanted to highlight this wonderful organization and recommend this volunteer opportunity.

If you're visiting Maui and enjoy spending time with animals, the "Dog On Demand" program offered by the Maui Humane Society is an exceptional volunteer opportunity. It allows both visitors and residents to take shelter dogs out for a few hours, providing them exercise, socialization, and human interaction, which is especially valuable for dogs awaiting adoption.

Here’s an overview of what you can expect and how the program works:

  • Participants are paired with a dog that is up for adoption. Each dog has a profile on the Maui Humane Society website, including details about their personality and needs.
  • Dogs can be taken to nearby beaches, parks, or other public spaces. For example, one volunteer mentioned taking a spirited but affectionate dog named Felix to Big Beach for water play, followed by a visit to the Shops of Wailea for a relaxing outing.
  • Volunteers are responsible for ensuring the dog’s safety, providing water, and generally engaging with them in a positive and safe manner.

Additional notes and benefits:

  • The program is a great way to give back and help animals who are waiting for their forever homes.
  • Even if the outing doesn’t result in an immediate adoption, it provides essential socialization for the dogs, making them more appealing to potential adopters.
  • The Maui Humane Society can also arrange transportation for pets to the mainland if adoption is approved out of state.

This volunteer experience is highly recommended for visitors looking to combine a love of dogs with a meaningful activity on Maui. It's a unique way to make a positive impact on the local community and enjoy a fun, outdoor experience.
