O'Hare Airport

Hello,

We are deciding: flight starts in Phoenix to O'Hare to Scotland. We won't have to pick up our luggage in O'Hare, these will be sent to the next flight. Per one website, there is a bus we can get on to get from Terminal 1 to Terminal 5 so we won't have to go through TSA again. IS this bus service still available and we have a 2 hour layover? Thank you, Lois

Hello Lois,

At O'Hare International Airport, passengers connecting between terminals without exiting the secure area typically do not need to go through TSA again, especially if you are flying on the same airline or partner airlines and your luggage is checked through to the final destination. However, at O'Hare, Terminal 1 (American Airlines) and Terminal 5 (international departures for many carriers including British Airways) are separate terminals and not connected airside. This means that transferring between these terminals usually requires exiting the secure area and going through security again.

Regarding the bus service, O'Hare does offer a free Airport Transit System (ATS) that connects all terminals, parking lots, and the rental car center. This automated people mover operates 24/7 and can transport you between Terminal 1 and Terminal 5 efficiently. However, note that while the ATS is convenient, you will still need to go through TSA at Terminal 5 for your international flight if you are entering that terminal for departure.

  • ATS (Airport Transit System) connects Terminal 1 and Terminal 5, running frequently (every few minutes).
  • Travel time on the ATS between terminals is about 10–15 minutes, but allow extra time for walking and security.
  • With a 2-hour layover, it is feasible, but it is recommended to move quickly since international flights often require arriving at least 60–90 minutes before departure.

Additional tips:

  • Check your airline’s instructions—they sometimes provide a dedicated shuttle or assistance for connecting international flights.
  • Be prepared for possible lines at security in Terminal 5; even with the ATS, the total transfer could take 45–60 minutes depending on crowds.
  • Have boarding passes for your next flight ready and confirm gate information in advance to avoid last-minute stress.

In summary, the bus/ATS is available and reliable, but you will still need to go through security at Terminal 5. A 2-hour layover should be sufficient if you move efficiently, but leave no room for delays.
