First time in New Orleans with kid (10)
Hello,
my family and I will be in New Orleans in a couple of weeks. Traveling with our 10 year old jazz lover / trombone player. We are staying in the garden district . I would love and appreciate any recommendations/sample itinerary for food/restaurants, alligator/swamp tours, and a great jazz . show. Thank you in advance.
Visiting New Orleans with a 10-year-old who loves jazz and trombone can be a fun and enriching experience. Staying in the Garden District gives you a beautiful, quieter base with easy access to streetcars and nearby attractions. Here’s a detailed guide for food, tours, and jazz shows suitable for families.
For food, New Orleans is full of family-friendly and kid-friendly options. You’ll want to focus on classic dishes but also accommodate a child’s tastes:
- Café du Monde: A must for beignets and café au lait. Kids usually love the powdered sugar treat.
- Mother’s Restaurant: Known for po’boys and hearty Southern fare, good for a casual lunch.
- Dat Dog or Port of Call: Fun for kids with hot dogs, burgers, and creative toppings.
- Commander's Palace: Iconic Creole fine dining; offers a lunch menu that’s more approachable for kids and a famous jazz brunch.
For swamp or alligator tours, several family-friendly options exist. Since you have a child, look for tours with safety and shorter durations (1–2 hours):
- Cajun Encounters Swamp Tour: Offers small-group tours with expert guides and lots of wildlife viewing.
- Jean Lafitte Swamp Tour: Accessible and informative, great for kids to see alligators safely and learn about Louisiana ecosystems.
- Airboat Adventures: Fast-paced and exciting for children, but check age restrictions and weather considerations.
For jazz shows, you’ll want family-appropriate venues rather than the late-night clubs. Frenchmen Street and the French Quarter have several options:
- Preservation Hall: Classic New Orleans jazz venue with early shows suitable for families. Acoustically intimate, no alcohol focus, and highly educational.
- Fritzel’s European Jazz Club: Daytime or early evening shows allow for kids, offering lively performances without the late-night party atmosphere.
- Snug Harbor Jazz Bistro: Has earlier family-friendly sets, check the schedule for daytime or early evening performances.
Sample 2-day itinerary idea:
- Day 1: Morning: Stroll in the Garden District to see historic homes. Lunch at Mother’s or Dat Dog. Afternoon: Streetcar ride to the French Quarter, explore shops and sights. Early evening jazz show at Preservation Hall. Dinner nearby.
- Day 2: Morning swamp or alligator tour. Lunch on the way back. Afternoon: Explore Audubon Park or City Park (great for walking and kid-friendly playgrounds). Dinner at Commander's Palace or casual family spot. Optionally, an early evening stroll along Frenchmen Street for live street jazz and performers.
Other tips:
- Use the St. Charles Streetcar to travel between Garden District, French Quarter, and downtown—it’s scenic and easy with a child.
- Plan for flexibility; New Orleans can be warm and humid even in winter, so short breaks and indoor stops help.
- Bring water and snacks for tours and strolls.
With this approach, you’ll get a mix of historic sights, jazz exposure, fun food, and exciting wildlife experiences—all accessible with your 10-year-old.
