Can I use US credit cards or Chinese Alipay
I have US credit cards and Chinese Alipay on a Chinese cell phone.
Will I be able to use these in Macau & Hong Kong?
You will generally be able to use your US credit cards and Chinese Alipay in Macau and Hong Kong, but there are some important details and limitations to be aware of.
US Credit Cards:
- Major credit cards like Visa, Mastercard, and American Express are widely accepted in hotels, larger shops, restaurants, and casinos in both Macau and Hong Kong.
- Smaller shops, local markets, street vendors, and some public transport may not accept foreign cards. Always have some cash on hand (Macau Pataca in Macau; Hong Kong Dollar in Hong Kong).
- Some card issuers may charge foreign transaction fees. Inform your bank in advance to avoid any transaction blocks.
Chinese Alipay:
- Alipay works in many locations in Hong Kong and Macau, especially larger retailers, shopping malls, and some restaurants. Look for QR code payment options labeled for Alipay or “Alipay HK.”
- Some places only accept the Hong Kong version of Alipay (AlipayHK), so check whether your account is compatible. Mainland China Alipay may not always work seamlessly.
- For smaller local vendors, taxis, or markets, Alipay may not be accepted, so having local cash is still advisable.
Tips for smooth payment:
- Carry a small amount of local currency for minor purchases and street food.
- Use credit cards for hotels, large restaurants, and shopping to avoid carrying too much cash.
- If you rely on Alipay, check the app in advance and make sure your account is funded and the QR code works for international payments.
In short, your US credit cards will work widely, and Alipay is increasingly accepted, but a mix of both plus some cash is the most practical approach.
