Things to do in Fort Lauderdale?
So my husband and I are going to Fort Lauderdale for a week, next week. On 2 of the days, he is going to be attending a work conference during the day so I'm gonna be at a loose end. I've had a look at some activities to do in the area, but it seems to be a lot of the same thing, stuff like the boat tours, Everglade tours etc. Are there any recommendations, particularly for solo activities on those 2 days, but also activities for when my husband isn't working. Everglades for example, I could do solo as he is highly allergic to mosquitos, but then there are some things which I'd prefer to do as a couple.
In terms of interests, I'm not OVERLY interested in sight seeing (I don't mind it but I don't make it a key focus on holiday), I am quite the foodie, my more personal interests are more geeky/thrill/tech etc, that sort of thing. Last 2 years we have been we did that Xtreme Action Park but only so much you can do there.
Would love to go to Orlando but the travel on a coach is just too long, and Uber/Taxi is just too expensive for the day (we're thinking Universal or Epic Universe).
I've heard Miami there is more to do, but any recommendations are appreciated.
Fort Lauderdale offers more than just the classic boat tours and Everglades trips. Since you’ll have a couple of solo days and some time as a couple, here’s a mix of activities tailored to your interests in food, tech, and thrill-seeking experiences, plus things to do together.
For solo activities while your husband is at his conference:
- Foodie Exploration: Fort Lauderdale has a thriving food scene. You could do a self-guided food tour in the Las Olas Boulevard area, which is packed with cafes, bakeries, and specialty food shops. Don’t miss Wild Sea Oyster Bar & Grille or Louie Bossi’s for authentic Italian dishes.
- Interactive & Tech Experiences: Check out Mindcraft Escape Rooms or Stray Boots Scavenger Hunts which offer tech-driven puzzles and challenges in the city—fun and engaging for a solo visitor.
- Museums & Exhibits: The NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale often has immersive exhibits. Additionally, the Fort Lauderdale Historical Society or Young At Art Museum (more interactive) could be enjoyable for a curious mind.
- Parks & Nature Walks: Visit Hugh Taylor Birch State Park for a peaceful solo hike or rent a kayak/canoe for a quiet paddle through the canals—less crowded and a good escape into nature.
For activities together as a couple:
- Food & Dining Experiences: Book a culinary experience such as a chef’s tasting menu at 15th Street Fisheries or Steak 954. You could also try a sunset cruise with onboard dining for a relaxed evening.
- Thrill & Adventure: If you want some excitement beyond Xtreme Action Park, consider indoor skydiving at iFLY Fort Lauderdale or a high-speed airboat tour of the Everglades (if your husband is comfortable with mosquitoes).
- Arts & Culture Strolls: Wander the Riverwalk Arts & Entertainment District, featuring galleries, street art, and local shops. It’s scenic and leisurely, ideal for a couple’s afternoon.
- Day Trips to Miami: Since Miami is only about 40 minutes away, you could plan a half-day trip to Wynwood Walls for street art, and check out the Pérez Art Museum for modern exhibits and tech-inspired installations.
Additional tips:
- Consider renting an e-bike or scooter for easy solo exploration without relying on taxis or public transport.
- Booking a private food tour or tech-focused tour could allow you to experience the city in a niche way that aligns with your interests.
- Check for pop-up events, tech meetups, or immersive exhibits happening during your stay—they often offer unique experiences that are short and engaging.
With this mix, your solo days will be active and interesting, and your couple days will have a blend of relaxation, food, and mild adventure without relying on long trips or expensive rides.
