China's northernmost county - Tahe, a small border town deep in the Greater Khingan Range, at -30°C

Preface

When talking about Tahe, you may not feel very familiar with it, but Mohe should be well known to everyone. Mohe is the northernmost city, and Tahe, which is adjacent to Mohe, is the northernmost county.

Tahe is located in the Greater Khingan Range area of Heilongjiang Province. It is bordered by Huma County to the east, Mohe County to the west, Xinlin District and Huzhong District to the south, and faces Russia across the river to the north with the centerline of the main channel of the Heilongjiang River as the boundary.

Tahe is a major timber production base in China, boasting dense forests rich in oxygen. The Jiamo Highway, Tahe-Huhai Highway, Fuxi Railway, and Tahe-Han Railway traverse the region, boasting numerous tourist attractions, including primeval forests, the Sino-Russian border river, the Golden Ancient Road, and the ancient human remains of Tahe's Eighteen Stations.

The name of Tahe County can be traced back to the name of its seat, Tahe Town. The original name for Tahe Town was "Xiaoguqigu," an Oroqen word meaning "a place with abundant water and grass," also translated as "a place with many towers." In 1954, during a forest management survey, the Ministry of Forestry named the area Tahekou, where the Tahar River meets the Huma River. This name later evolved into "Tahe."

Daxinganlingcheck the details

The Greater Khingan Range, the western component of the Greater Khingan Range, lies in the Greater Khingan Range region of Heilongjiang Province and northeast of Hulunbuir City in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. It serves as the watershed between the Inner Mongolia Plateau and the Songliao Plain. Stretching from the banks of the Heilongjiang River in the north to the upper valley of the Xilamulun River in the south, the Greater Khingan Range runs northeast-southwest, stretching over 1,200 kilometers and 200-300 kilometers wide. Its summit is Mount Suoyueerji. Densely forested, the Greater Khingan Range is one of China's key forestry bases. Key tree species include Larix gmelinii, Pinus sylvestris, Picea rubra, Betula platyphylla, Quercus mongolica, and Populus davidiana. The Greater Khingan Range's birch forests are a unique sight, offering unique beauty in each season. Autumn is particularly spectacular, with the mountains blanketed in golden foliage creating a breathtaking scene. Embracing the forests is akin to a fairyland, attracting numerous visitors annually. In addition, there are Mohe, Yanzhigou, Stone Forest, Wudaohuolu Island Film and Television Base, Fenglin Nature Reserve, Nirki Reservoir, Daxinganling Resource Museum, Luogu River, Yingshanhong Ski Resort, Aihui City, and a series of other natural and cultural landscapes.

Kaikukang Township

When visiting the northernmost county in China, one can't miss Kaikukang Township, thanks to its proximity to Russia. Stepping on the frozen Heilongjiang River, the other side is a foreign land, and perhaps because of this, a certain sense of homesickness arises.

The language and meaning of the name of Kaikukang Township are unknown, but it is suspected to be Russian; some say it is Oroqen, meaning "tree".

Kaikukang's average annual temperature is -2.4°C, with seven months experiencing subzero temperatures and an average frost-free period of 80 to 100 days. This high-altitude, cold region boasts a unique climate. This unique landscape boasts lush forests, clear rivers, and rare wildlife.

The mountains are covered with Dahurian larch, Chinese larch, white birch and cypress; precious red deer, moose, black bear, wild boar, lynx, roe deer, hazel grouse and other rare birds and animals live in the forest.

Heilong Mountain in Kaikukang Township is not far from the township government. It can be reached in about 10 minutes by walking north from the west side of the township government.

Kaikukang retains traces of Russian culture, with old houses bearing the marks of time, some nearly a century old. The most representative of these are the "logolen" houses. Logolen are typical Russian dwellings, known for their warmth in winter and coolness in summer, and their durability. These century-old houses remain well-preserved.

Because Kaikukang is far away from the city and has a sparse population, the natural landscape here still maintains its completely original form. The self-sufficient lifestyle that has continued for hundreds of years and the beautiful rural scenery will make visitors feel as if they are in a happy and harmonious world, showing the original and pastoral style everywhere.

Twenty-two Station Forest Farm

I stepped on the coldest winter wind and set foot on a land further north than the north. A small town called Tahe, a northernmost county town entangled with countless pasts, a place where I could indulge in the dust without restraint.

Across the vast expanse of fertile land, a city covered in ice and snow, bearing the weight of history and the past, sullenly recounts to those who pass by stories of times we have never experienced.

Dating back to the Qing Dynasty, to strengthen control over border regions, numerous post stations and roads were established along the northeastern, northern, northwestern, and southwestern borderlands. Here, in Tahe, northeast of the Greater Khingan Range forest region, on the banks of the Heilongjiang River, at 124° east longitude and 52° north latitude, lies the site of the Twenty-Two Ancient Post Stations.

"Bounded by fertile plains to the south and mountains to the north, connected by rivers, it is a place of transport from top to bottom." A post road stretching over 700 kilometers runs from Moergen through the Heilongjiang Provincial General's Residence, then up the Heilongjiang River to the city of Yaksa. It is named the Moergen Ancient Post Road.

On the map, you can find more than twenty signs arranged in sequence. These are the place names of villages that evolved from post stations and can be regarded as a scenic spot of Heilongjiang's place name culture.

The post road runs from the first station, Moergen, to the ninth station, Wodu River, and then enters Huma County and Tahe County in the Greater Khingan Range area. The Eighteenth Station Oroqen Township and the Twenty-second Station Forest Farm in Tahe County are both popular places.

The next stations are 24 to 29 in Mohe County, Greater Khingan Range, and the last one is station 32, located in Luoguhe Village, Mohe Township, Mohe County. The 30th station, Mohe, may have been replaced during the evolution of place names, or may have been lost due to the loss of its current location.

The Twenty-Two Station Forest Farm is the only local state-owned forest farm in Tahe County. It has also created the "Four Scenic Spots" of the station. The unified scenic area planning includes Black Dragon Cave, Moon Bay Observation Tower, Daxiergenqi River Rafting, Station Theme Square and self-driving camping sites.

A cultural corridor will be built in the theme square of the post station, with the theme of highlighting the post station culture, the development of Daxinganling culture, the educated youth culture and the reform, transformation and development culture of the state-owned forest farm. The development history of the Twenty-Two Station Forest Farm will be promoted to tourists in a graphic and textual way.

The "Shanghai Educated Youth Road" at the Twenty-Second Station Forest Farm records that era when batches of educated youth rushed to the Great Northern Wilderness and reclaimed every inch of land and forest here with their own hands.

Birch Forest Villa

In the northeast of our country, there are three mountain ranges: Greater Khingan Range, Lesser Khingan Range and Changbai Mountain Range. Along the northernmost border is the area hidden deep in the Greater Khingan Range.

The Greater Khingan Range is renowned for its forests. Even today, a vast area of undeveloped primeval forest remains on the western slopes of the northern region, in the lower reaches of the Ergun River. Among the hundreds of tree species found in the Greater Khingan Range, the most enduring are the larch and white birch.

The Birch Forest Villa in Walagan Town, 35 kilometers north of the Tahe River and at the northern foot of the Yilehuli Mountains, covers an area of 40,000 square meters and a water surface area of 21,000 square meters. It means "sunny and sloping" in the Oroqen language.

In the villa, you can experience various snow sports, including the thrilling snowmobile rides and the exciting tug-of-war competitions.

Rime Bay

The earliest mention of rime was in a book called "Zi Lin" during the Southern and Northern Dynasties, which explained that "cold air forms ice like pearls, which melt when exposed to sunlight. In Qi and Lu, it is called rime."

Following the recommendation of the local outdoor teacher in Tahe, it is very easy to see rime in the unfrozen river of Wusong Bay, but whether you can see it in the end still depends on luck!

If you can’t see it, don’t worry, because this is also the Zalinkuer Mountain Provincial Forest Park, the best outdoor tourist destination for Tahe wilderness adventures, outdoor enthusiasts are in luck!

Qixiashan Botanical Garden

The Tahe Qixiashan Botanical Garden is located at the foot of Qixia Mountain, west of Tahe County, where forest coverage exceeds 97%. After a recent snowfall, the lush vegetation of Qixia Mountain is covered in layers of white snow. Ascending the wooden steps, still stained by snow, the Shuangcui Pavilion and Tingfeng Pavilion, nestled against the mountainside, blend seamlessly with the alpine pines and cypresses.

Climbing to the top of the peak, where it meets the wooden plank road leading up the mountain on the south side, a 27-meter-high tower was built, named "Watching Tower". Climbing to the top of the tower, you can overlook the winter scenery of the entire city of Tahe.

Ice and Snow Park

It seems that wherever there is something to do with ice and snow, there is an ice and snow park. Tahe is no exception, but this ice and snow park is a true ice and snow park where both adults and children have a blast.

Tahe County hosts an annual ice and snow park, each with a different theme and attractions. The 2019 theme, "Ice and Snow in Xing'an, Frozen Tahe," blends elements of romance, animation, and entertainment, presenting an unforgettable "ice and snow feast" for visitors and the public.

The Tahe Ice and Snow Park, grandly opened within the Dicui Garden in Tahe, covers approximately 4.5 hectares and utilizes 5,000 cubic meters of ice and 3,500 cubic meters of snow. Crystal-clear ice sculptures depicting "Prosperous Dragon," "Year of the Pig," and "Mother and Child Love" shimmer and dazzle against a backdrop of dazzling fireworks and lights. Attractions such as the Temple of Heaven's Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests, the Eternal Love, and the Elegant Snow House are all dazzling and captivating, offering visitors an unprecedented immersion in the romance of ice and snow.

The ice and snow park mainly focuses on interactive experience, and has also designed a number of amusement facilities and activity experience projects, such as children's naughty castle, Thomas the train journey, large interactive ice slide, snowmobiles, snow bumper cars and other snow entertainment projects, allowing adults and children to experience the passion of northern ice and snow games while appreciating the beautiful ice and snow scenery.

Conclusion

As the lights come on, the ice-sculpted town becomes even more dazzling. Pristine white snow sculptures, glittering ice sculptures, and colorful lights define the Tahe River after nightfall. Take a deep breath and savor this rare, refreshing air.
