Huangshan, a world-renowned mountain and a World Cultural and Natural Heritage site, is located in Huangshan City, Anhui Province, approximately 60 kilometers from the central urban area of Tunxi District. Huangshan boasts 88 peaks over a thousand meters, including three main peaks. Guangmingding, the second highest peak, is open year-round and serves as a must-see for touring the front and back mountains. Lianhua Peak, the highest peak, and Tiandu Peak, the third highest, rotate opening every five years.

Huangshan is located in the southern Anhui region. To visit the Huangshan Scenic Area, you usually go directly to Huangshan City. The transportation infrastructure here is developing rapidly. Currently, there are airports, high-speed rail stations, and railway stations. The main areas and scenic spots are basically fully covered by highways.
Huangshan Tunxi International Airport is a typical city center airport, located in Tunxi District, Huangshan City, only about 5 kilometers away from the central urban area. It currently has one terminal building and has opened routes from Huangshan to 22 domestic cities such as Beijing, Guangzhou, and Shenyang, as well as 6 international cities such as Taiwan and Seoul. Taxi service is available on the first floor of the airport terminal. There is no direct shuttle bus from the airport to the Huangshan Scenic Area, so you can choose to charter a car or transfer to a bus.

Tips:
The tourist shuttle bus will depart when it is full or every half an hour or so. It is recommended to charter a bus from the airport to the Huangshan Scenic Area Transfer Center to save time and worry. If you have ample time, you can consider staying one night in the city (Tunxi District) and then visit the Huangshan Scenic Area the next day.
Huangshan North Station is located in Tunxi District, Huangshan City, approximately 13 km from the city center and 50 km from the Huangshan Scenic Area. Opened in 2015, the fastest high-speed train journey from Hangzhou to Huangshan takes just 1.5 hours, allowing residents of Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and Shanghai to enjoy weekend trips to Huangshan. The first floor of the high-speed rail station is the arrivals section, while the second floor is the departure section. Fast food restaurants are available within the station, and taxis, buses, and shared cars are readily available near the exit (they are limited and rarely available). Ride-hailing services are also available online.
There is a special tourist bus from Huangshan North Station to Huangshan Scenic Area, which normally runs every hour (the frequency will be adjusted during the epidemic, currently there are 4 buses per day), the ticket price is 20 yuan per person, and the journey takes about 1 hour. Tips: It's about a 12-minute drive from the high-speed rail station. There's a small but popular ancient village called The Wizard of Oz, Xixinan. It's the closest free scenic spot to the high-speed rail station. If you have plenty of time, consider visiting there.
Private vehicles are not allowed to drive directly up the Huangshan Scenic Area; all vehicles must transfer to the scenic area's shuttle bus. If driving to Huangshan, it's generally recommended to navigate to the Huangshan Scenic Area Transfer Center in Tangkou Town, where you can purchase tickets and transfer to the scenic area. There are two types of parking lots in Tangkou Town, near the south gate of Huangshan: one private parking lot and one state-owned parking lot. Private parking fees generally range from 40 yuan per day in the off-season to 60 yuan per day in the peak season.
As an international tourist city, Huangshan City has very mature quality group tour activities. Reservations must be confirmed the day before departure, and the bus and tour guide will pick you up at the designated hotel (most hotels in Tunxi District) the next day. The buses are generally 35-seater buses.
Huangshan Scenic Area not only has entrance fees to the scenic area, but also has transfer fees for the scenic shuttle bus to enter the scenic area and the cable car fees for going up and down the mountain.
To enter the Huangshan Scenic Area, you can choose the South Gate (located in Tangkou Town, the main entrance to the Huangshan Scenic Area, with convenient transportation and complete facilities. You can take the Yungu Cableway and Yuping Cableway), the North Gate (located in Gengcheng Town, Huangshan District. The transportation is not as convenient as the South Gate, and the passenger flow is relatively small. You can take the Taiping Cableway), or the West Gate (located in Jiaocun Town, Huangshan District. It is only suitable for hiking and is currently closed.

Winter off-season (December 20th - January 20th): Full-price tickets are 150 yuan each, half-price tickets are 75 yuan each. Tips: Free admission: Children 6 years old and under or 1.2 meters tall, seniors 65 years old and over, active military personnel, firefighters, people with disabilities, journalists, members of the Photographers Association, and medical aid workers in Hubei Province enjoy free admission with valid ID. Huangshan has three mountain cableways (Yuping Cableway, Yungu Cableway, and Taiping Cableway) and one mountain sightseeing cable car (Xihai Grand Canyon Train).

Transfer from Huangshan's South Gate to the scenic area via Yungu Temple and Ciguang Pavilion. The transfer to Yungu Temple (towards the back mountain) takes about 22 minutes and costs 19 yuan per person one way. The transfer to Ciguang Pavilion (towards the front mountain) takes about 18 minutes and costs 19 yuan per person one way. The one-way fare to the hot springs is 11 yuan per person.
Enter from the north gate of Huangshan Mountain and transfer to Songgu Temple. The one-way ticket is 5 yuan per person (sometimes no transfer is required in the off-season). The journey takes about 15 minutes.
Tips: Discount policy: Children under 1.2 meters (inclusive) in height are free of charge, and children between 1.2 and 1.5 meters (inclusive) can buy half-price tickets.
There are many accommodation options for visiting Huangshan. If you want to watch the sea of clouds and sunrise, staying at the top of the mountain is the best choice. If you have certain requirements on price and time, you can consider staying at the foot of the mountain or in nearby ancient villages or Tunxi city.
Staying on the mountain allows you to enjoy Huangshan in a relatively relaxed and comfortable manner, and it is convenient to get up early to watch the sunrise.
Several hotels are available on the mountain, ranging in price from Baiyun Hotel, Xihai Hotel, Shilin Hotel, Yupinglou Hotel, Guangmingding Mountain Villa, Paiyunxinglu Hotel, and Yunji B&B. All hotels provide complimentary military coats or warm down jackets for sunrise viewing. The Huangshan Summit Hotel offers excellent accommodations. Paiyunxinglu is the newest on the mountain, while Baiyun Hotel is the closest to Guangmingding. The summit hotels are typically fully booked during holidays, so reservations are recommended.
Huangshan's southern gate is located in Tangkou Town. Aside from the hot spring resort hotels halfway up the mountain, most accommodation options are concentrated in Tangkou Town. For a day trip to Huangshan, staying here is convenient for an early morning hike. Nearby are restaurants, banks, supermarkets, and shops. There are many different types of accommodation, and prices vary widely. Hotels at the foot of the mountain generally offer luggage storage, making it easy to hike the next day.
Huangshan is only 30km from Hongcun, a drive of less than 40 minutes. Many newcomers to Huizhou choose to combine Huangshan with a visit to the ancient villages of Huizhou. Hongcun is a great choice for accommodation, with a wide selection of inns within the scenic area and hotels and B&Bs outside. At night, you can enjoy the nightscape of Hongcun and in the morning, watch the sunrise at Qishu Lake.
Because Huangshan is not far from the city center, those who have higher requirements for accommodation quality or want to spend more time experiencing the rich Huizhou culture and Huizhou cuisine can consider staying in Tunxi District. At night, you can also visit Tunxi Old Street, Liyang Lane, etc.
Tips: Huangshan's local cuisine is Huizhou cuisine, which is heavy in oil, spicy and cooked over a lot of heat. It tends to be salty and spicy, so those who are used to lighter flavors should be careful.
The food used on Huangshan Mountain is not transported directly to the mountain by cable car. Due to the special terrain, you have to walk to the hotels on the mountain top. The food and daily necessities on the mountain are also carried up by porters, so the prices are relatively high.
Several major hotels provide buffet lunch and dinner services. There are also fast food restaurants and KFC near Paiyun Tower, and Yuping Tower also provides afternoon tea.
Buffet lunch: Except for the buffet at Yupinglou Hotel at 120 yuan/person and the buffet at Paiyun Hotel at 150 yuan/person, the buffet at other hotels on the Huangshan Mountain is 140 yuan/person, and the price of private room banquets starts from 220 yuan/person.
Buffet dinner: Except for Xihai Hotel and Paiyun Hotel, where the buffet dinner is priced at RMB 180 per person, the buffet dinner in other hotels is priced at RMB 160 per person, and the price of private room banquets starts from RMB 220 per person.
Tips: Huangshan provides free hot water! Starting from February 2021, all 23 public toilets in the Huangshan Scenic Area are equipped with free drinking water equipment to ensure the supply of hot and warm water.
The scenery of Huangshan is not restricted by seasons. In spring (March-May), azaleas bloom in all colors, in summer (June-August), pine trees surge and springs gurgle, in autumn (September-November), red maples are colorful and romantic, and in winter (December-February), ice and snow cover the ground and rime is crystal clear. It can be said that Huangshan has scenery in all seasons. The summer vacation in July and August attracts the most tourists, and the probability of sea of clouds appearing in winter is the highest.
There are four trailheads in Huangshan, two at the South Gate (Ciguang Pavilion and Yungu Temple), one at the North Gate (Songgu Temple), and one at the West Gate (Diaoqiao Temple is temporarily closed). There are cable cars at the South and North Gate trailheads. There is a Yuping cable car at Ciguang Pavilion at the South Gate, a Yungu cable car near Yungu Temple, and a Taiping cable car at Songgu Temple at the North Gate. There is no cable car at the West Gate, so you can only go up the mountain on foot.
There are many routes to visit Huangshan, and after going up the mountain, you still need to walk between the scenic spots. Therefore, taking the cable car up and down the mountain is the choice for most people, which is convenient, easy, time-saving and labor-saving.
The hike up the mountain alone takes 3 hours, which is more suitable for experienced outdoor enthusiasts who aim to conquer the mountains on foot. Due to the epidemic, camping is temporarily not open on the top of the mountain. Compared with the beautiful scenery of Huangshan Mountain, spending too much time and energy on climbing and walking the whole way is time-consuming and laborious, and the price of accommodation on the top of the mountain is relatively high, so few people choose to visit Huangshan on foot.
