The Nakasendo, dating back to the Edo period in 1600, stretches over 500 kilometers through the mountains of central Honshu. It served as a crucial postal route connecting Edo (present-day Tokyo) and Kyoto. With 69 post stations, it was a vital route for merchants.
The post stations of Magome and Tsumago are considered the most intact Edo-era streets to date. We recommend a light hike to immerse yourself in the history of the Nakasendo, imitating the life of an Edo-era traveler.
