Perched dramatically on the steep cliffs of Altındere Valley National Park, Sumela Monastery is one of Turkey’s most breathtaking historical sites. Founded in the 4th century, this Greek Orthodox monastery is dedicated to the Virgin Mary and has served as a spiritual sanctuary for centuries.
Climbing up to the monastery was an unforgettable experience. The trail winds through lush forest, with the sound of rushing water echoing from the valley below. Once at the top, the view of the surrounding mountains is simply spectacular. Inside, I was amazed by the vibrant frescoes that still adorn the chapel walls, telling biblical stories with vivid colors despite centuries of weathering.
The combination of nature, history, and faith makes Sumela Monastery a must-visit for anyone exploring the Black Sea region. It feels like stepping into another world where history and serenity blend perfectly.
