Sankaku West Port is a natural port located on the west side of the Uto Peninsula in Kyushu, Japan. It is one of the three major ports built during the Meiji period. It was built based on the Japanese government's industrial revitalization policy and domestic overall planning during the Meiji period.
It is part of the history of early Japanese coal export infrastructure development. In order to solve the transportation problem of the Miike coal mine, it became one of the first three export port projects. The Sanjiaoxi Port combined the design of Japanese civil engineering and Dutch hydraulic engineer Milder.
Construction began in 1884 and was completed and put into use in 1887. However, the Sanchi coal mine is 44 kilometers away from Sanjiaoxi Port and has low economic efficiency. When Mitsui took over the Miike Coal Mine from the Meiji government, it abandoned the port built specifically for it and rebuilt Miike Port in 1903.
In addition to building a 730-meter-long brick and stone pier and floating bridge, neat roads and drainage systems were built through land reclamation, and overall town planning was carried out. As a precious cultural heritage, it has become part of the world's cultural heritage.
The comparison between Sankaku West Port and Miike Port shows the rapid evolution of port design and commercial industrial thinking in Japan during the Meiji period, which can also be said to be a super error correction ability.
Today, Sanjiaoxi Port no longer has any traces of an export port, but has become a leisure place for nearby residents and a tourist attraction.
