Arriving at Asahikawa Station around noon after a 1.5-hour JR train ride from Sapporo, I noticed advertisements for "Demon Slayer" inside the station. The movie is set to premiere in July, and I can't wait! At the tourist center within the station, I purchased a 2-day bus pass for ¥1800 and headed to the nearby Tokiwa Park. The view from Ishikari River was vast and calming, offering a sense of relaxation. The park, adjacent to the river, is expansive and features attractions like Chidori Pond and a shrine, making it a worthwhile spot for a stroll. Asahikawa at night is quieter compared to Sapporo, but places like AEON near Asahikawa Station and Heiwa-dori Shopping Park are great for dining and shopping.
On the second day, I continued using the 2-day bus pass to visit Asahiyama Zoo. After a 45-minute ride on a bus decorated with adorable animal designs, I arrived at the zoo. The animal information boards inside the zoo are hand-drawn, adding a whimsical touch. The zoo's layout is designed to allow visitors to observe animals from far, medium, and close distances, providing an exciting experience. You can even place your hand against the glass to touch the lion's paw or look up to see a snow leopard lounging above. The bird area is equally impressive, showcasing a wide variety of species. Two orangutans stole the show with their performances—one climbed high and descended rapidly, while the other, avoiding the heat, climbed indoors. Their acts were spontaneous and not directed by staff, showcasing their intelligence and charm.
