Introducing South Mosque

The South Mosque is located on Xiaoxi Road, Shenhe District, Shenyang City, Liaoning Province. It is commonly known as the "South Temple" and is the largest Islamic mosque in Shenyang.

The founder of this temple, Tie Kui, had military achievements in the early Qing Dynasty. He was appointed as the Cavalry Commander, and was granted the titles of General Xian and Guanglu Dafu. He was enthusiastic about religious affairs and donated his family property to build this temple.

Later, it was expanded during the reigns of Kangxi, Qianlong and Jiaqing, and reached its current size.

The main buildings of the South Mosque include the prayer hall, the Moon-Watching Tower, the north and south lecture halls, male and female bathing rooms, the tea room, the spirit platform, etc., with four courtyards in front and back.

The prayer hall is located in the middle of the second courtyard, facing east and west, with a brick and wood structure, more than 20 rooms, divided into two floors in front and back, with Arabic plaques hanging under the eaves, in a typical Islamic style.

The Moon-Watching Tower is 30 meters high and has a hexagonal plan. A copper-gilt crescent moon hangs high on the top, and the eaves are soaring in the air. Four watchtowers are inlaid on the eaves, and wind chimes are hung on them.

The North and South Lecture Halls were built in the 20th year of Emperor Qianlong's reign (1755). The interior is paved with marble and has flying eaves with animal ornaments.

The South Mosque is now a center for Muslim activities in Shenyang, with an imam presiding over religious affairs. During Islamic festivals such as Eid al-Adha and Eid al-Adha, the mosque becomes bustling with activity.

It also frequently receives foreign guests from Islamic countries such as Pakistan, and has been listed as a key cultural relic protection site at the municipal level.
