Assisi, Italy

Located in the Umbria region of Italy, it is a medieval city built on a hill that arose because of religion. Catholic saint Francis lived here and founded the Franciscan Order.

Assisi is one of the 15 major Catholic pilgrimage sites in the world and is one of the most important pilgrimage sites in Italy.

More than 1,000 years ago, St. Francis was born into a wealthy merchant family in Assisi, Italy. He was a bohemian when he was young, and after experiencing war, he had an epiphany in his 20s. He gave up wealth, pursued poverty and seclusion, and made a living by begging. He wore coarse monk's robes, went to a small church outside the city every day to pray devoutly, and spread the gospel everywhere. His life was full of legends and attracted devout Christian followers from all over Western Europe. Thus was formed the Franciscan Order. Because of his influence, the Pope granted him the right to preach in an effort to suppress the heresy that was emerging throughout Western Europe. Many churches in Italy belong to the Franciscan Order, and the first missionaries to come to China were also members of the Franciscan Order.

St. Francis' great influence in the Catholic world has made Assisi a holy place in the minds of Catholics, and countless devout Catholics are proud to have visited Assisi.

Assisi is not only a beautiful and rich mountain city, but also houses many medieval art masterpieces. Everything here is closely related to the life and spiritual heritage of St. Francis. For example, the Basilica of St. Francis, paintings by masters such as Giotto, the father of Italian painting, Cimabue, an Italian painter, and Lorenzetti, a Siena painter.

In addition, the specialty truffles of Umbria are also not to be missed!
