Just a short drive from Göreme, Zelve Open-Air Museum is a very remarkable historical site. This once-thriving cave village was inhabited until the 1950s and now serves as a vast open-air museum showcasing ancient rock-cut homes, churches, and tunnels carved into soft volcanic stone.
One of the unique features here is the tunnel connecting the valleys, an ancient passage that allowed villagers to move safely between different parts of the settlement. Walking through this tunnel adds a sense of adventure and insight into how the community lived and protected itself.
Zelve is also home to a remarkable monastery complex, where monks once gathered for worship and daily life, with beautifully carved chapels and prayer rooms. Nearby, you’ll spot the iconic pigeon houses — small, carefully carved niches in the rocks designed to shelter thousands of pigeons. These birds were essential to locals for communication and fertilizer for the vineyards.
