Azerbaijan, a resource-rich Caucasus country facing the Caspian Sea

The city of Baku itself is said to have existed since the 5th century,
but it is believed to have only emerged into the public eye since the 10th century.

From the 16th century onwards, Azerbaijan developed as a key trading hub on the Silk Road, and the indigenous Shirvanshahs dynasty flourished there, until it was adopted by neighboring countries.

Many medieval and ancient historical buildings remain in the old city, and the Old City of Baku (Icheri Sheher) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, part of the "Walled City of Baku, Palace of the Shirvanshahs, and the Maiden's Tower.

Notable landmarks include:
