📍 Mount Batur
📸 4 Nov, 2023
Continuing the tradition of climbing mountains on almost every trip, this time I also joined a group to climb the mountain to see the sunrise.
In addition to climbing the mountain, there are actually different options to go up the mountain to see Rishan, such as taking a jeep, motorcycle, etc. However, these tours can only reach about 80% of the height at most, so we finally chose a hiking tour that can reach the top.
Mount Batur is at a maximum height of 1717m, so it can be very cold on the mountain. Friends who are going to hike should remember to prepare warm clothes! I wore a short-sleeved shirt, sports pants and an air-conditioned jacket that day. Although I didn't feel cold while climbing, it was super cold when I reached the top and waited for the sunrise without moving my body...
We stayed in Ubud the night before, and the pick-up time was 2:30 am. There were two other Greek sisters working in Singapore with us. One of the girls even said that she didn't climb mountains often, but she was more physically fit than me and didn't stop much... I was really too lazy. I stopped almost every few steps on the 30-60 minute journey to the top of the mountain... Too lazy... I think I'm more suitable for joining a private tour🫠
I don't think the mountain road is easy to walk on. The road to the top of Mount Fuji Yoshida is at least solid rock, but most of the mountain is sandy... It feels like climbing one step and taking two steps forward.
I must have climbed too slowly, and then a lady who said she was the tour leader's cousin followed me and dragged me up the slope. She would go to the top of the mountain with the tour group every morning to sell drinks and snacks. Seeing that she had accompanied me for quite a while, I felt embarrassed not to buy something for her (I guess she was really good at it) 🤣 so I bought her a bottle of Coke for HK$25. There are also many local people climbing up the mountain early in the morning to sell things, both adults and children, all selling snacks and handicrafts.
We started climbing the mountain at about 3:30 and reached the top at 5:30. There was already a little sunrise when we reached the top, but it didn't matter. As for our luck in watching the sunrise and sunset, there was fog and clouds every morning and most of the time it was foggy. Only when we were lucky could we see the beautiful sea of clouds and a little bit of sun.
This tour comes with breakfast, so you can enjoy the warm chocolate and breakfast while watching the sunrise. But don’t expect too much, as there are only a few simple meals on the mountain to keep you energized.
After watching the sun, we went to the top to see the smoking hole (?) of the active volcano. We saw everyone holding an incense stick and blowing towards the hole, and then a bunch of warm smoke would come out of the hole. The smoke here doesn't smell of sulfur.
The tour group fee is about HKD200 per person, and we will be taken to Coffee Plantation after we go down the mountain. We also added an ATV activity, which cost HKD485 per person and lasted until noon. We were also given a simple lunch after the activity (don’t expect too much about the taste, it’s not bad but not delicious either). I will share my thoughts on the other two activities in the next post 🫶🏻
