One of Bangkok's oldest temples, Wat Saket, is located just beyond the historic Rattanakosin island area and dates back to the Ayutthaya era, which lasted until 1767. Wat Sakae was the name given to the temple at the time. The temple was repaired and renamed Wat Saket Ratcha Wora Maha Wihan, or Wat Saket for short, when King Rama I became the first king of the Rattanakosin Kingdom. Wat Saket is well recognized for its 80-meter-high hill known as "Golden Mount" and the massive gilded stupa that sits atop it. It was previously Bangkok's highest point.
