Today I had the opportunity to visit the Junji Ito Horror House exhibition. Fans of Japanese horror comics are sure to be unaware of Junji Ito's work. If you haven't visited this horror exhibit, you're missing out!
The museum is divided into three zones: A, B, and C.
The horror experience is divided into two routes: A>C and B>C. Each zone has a different theme based on the author's books. Zone C houses the photo booth and souvenir shop. No matter which route you take, you'll always end up in Zone C. Our visit was Zone B (where you'll be asked to shake a fortune stick to choose a zone). The main character of this route is... "Soichi." (There are other characters, but you'll have to explore them yourself.)
Before entering the route, there are lockers for storing belongings to facilitate walking. Groups of about six people will be met by a staff member at the front, who will give each person a mask and a rope for holding onto as they walk. Then, the staff will send you off into the dark.
(Photos are not allowed from this section until you reach Zone C.)
The interior has a modern escape room/haunted house feel. The entrance begins with a videotrailer. The interior is decorated according to the theme of the story, and characters from the manga will greet you throughout the section. If you're feeling faint or can't continue, you can signal the staff to escort you out at any time.
Zone C houses the storyboards for the Junji Ito's Maniac series, which airs on Netflix, along with a videotrailer interviewing Junji Ito about the series and various aspects of his work. The Uzumaki (Death Spiral) zone offers plenty of photo opportunities before heading to the next zone to shop.
The Junji Ito Horror House exhibition will run from October 7th to December 31st, 2023, at MBK Center, 4th floor, Zone D. Tickets can be purchased online at Trip.com. It's super convenient!
