WatBenchamabophit is an old temple that has been around since the Ayutthaya period. It was named Wat Laem because it was located at the tip of the garden, next to the rice fields. It was also called Wat Sai Thong for this reason.

In 1827, Prince Phiphitphokphuben used the temple as a base to defend against Chao Anuwong. After suppressing the rebellion, he built 5 pagodas and named it WatBenchamabophit, which means the temple of the five princes.

Later, King Rama V established a new temple and named it WatBenchamabophitDitsitwanaram, the temple of King Rama V.
