- One of the purposes of establishing Wat Benchamabophit Dusitwanaram was to serve as a museum, collecting ancient Buddha images of various styles and periods. After King Chulalongkorn established Wat Benchamabophit Dusitwanaram, he envisioned that the gallery of the cloistered viharn (wihan) should house ancient Buddha images in various postures, enhancing their beauty and intricacy. He also recommended that they be placed as objects of worship for visitors to Wat Benchamabophit Dusitwanaram. Therefore, he graciously ordered Prince Damrong Rajanubhab to search for Buddha images of his interest, as stated in a speech given to members of the Siam Society at Wat Benchamabophit Dusitwanaram.
