Wat Suthat Thepwararam Ratchaworamahawihan, or as people like to call it, Wat Suthat, is an important temple in the capital city. It is also special because it is one of the six first-class royal temples of the Ratchaworamahawihan type and is the temple of the reign of King Ananda Mahidol, Rama VIII.
Wat Suthat is located in the inner city area of the capital city, opposite Lan Khon Muang (Bangkok City Hall). There is a prominent swing pole in front of the temple. It was built during the reign of King Rama I. It was originally named "Wat Maha Sutthawat". Later, he ordered the construction of a chapel to house "Phra Sri Sakyamuni" or "Phra To", the largest bronze Buddha statue built during the Phra Ruang dynasty of the Sukhothai era, which was invited from the royal chapel of Wat Mahathat in Sukhothai Province. However, the chapel was not completed before the end of the reign. This temple was expanded and completed during the reign of King Nangklao, Rama III, and was renamed "Wat Suthat Thepwararam Ratchaworamahawihan", which means Suthatsanakorn on Mount Sumeru, the center of the Daowadungsa heaven where Indra resides.
Wat Suthat is considered a royal temple with beautiful architecture, with early Rattanakosin art. Some parts have the influence of Ayutthaya art, such as the Vihara, which was influenced by the Vihara of Wat Mongkhon Bophit in Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Province. The roof is in the ancient Thai style, 2 levels, reduced by 1 level, covered with colored tiles, decorated with gables, raka leaves, and hongs. In the front and back of the Vihara, there are 3 doors on each side, which are carved wooden doors. It is said to be a masterpiece by King Phutthaloetla Naphalai, Rama II.
In addition to being a temple with beautiful architecture, Wat Suthat also has a peaceful atmosphere, suitable for worshipping and making merit, which will make your mind very peaceful and cool.
